Prologis (Japan Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director Chairman and CEO: Miki Yamada), a leading global company in the ownership, operation, and development of logistics real estate, conducted its “IMPACT Day”* on April 24th, where employees worldwide engage in volunteer activities simultaneously. Prologis holds its “IMPACT Day” every spring, and this year marks its 14th occurrence.
On “IMPACT Day,” Prologis employees worldwide leave their offices and participate in volunteer activities in various countries, collaborating with NPO organizations related to education, welfare, and the environment. In Japan, over 140 employees participated, divided into Kanto and Kansai regions.
■ Kanto Activities – Continuous Efforts Supporting Tree Growth: Weeding Undergrowth in Previously Planted Areas
Prologis’s Tokyo office and Prologis REIT Management employees collaborated with the NPO Mori no Lifestyle Kenkyujo (Location: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Eishin Takegaki) to carry out forest conservation activities at a facility for people with intellectual disabilities operated by the Social Welfare Corporation Komyokai (Location: Yachimata City, Chiba Prefecture; Chairman: Hirofusa Ozawa). This marks the third consecutive year of activities at this location.
Initially, approximately 1,000 trees, including cherry, cedar, and maple, were planted in a Satoyama area damaged by typhoons and pests. Subsequently, saplings were planted and crops were harvested. The activity was recognized with the “Grand Prize” at the “10th Corporate Volunteer Award” organized by the Tokyo Volunteer and Citizen’s Activities Center of the Tokyo Council of Social Welfare.
This time, similar to last year, weeding was performed in the planted areas to support the growth of the trees. The planted saplings are expected to grow into large trees in about 15 years, bringing many environmental benefits. These trees also provide firewood, creating “firewood splitting work” for the facility users with disabilities.
Additionally, activities included planting vegetables, installing trellises for wine grapes, shelling harvested peanuts, and making wreaths from grapevine tendrils. The wreaths are planned to be sold, contributing to the wages of the facility users. Sweets and vegetables produced at the facility were also sold.
■ Kansai Activities – Marine Life Survey in Osaka Bay
Prologis Osaka office employees conducted a survey of marine life inhabiting Osaka Bay on a coast near Kansai International Airport. Prologis has collaborated with the “NPO Osaka Bay Coastal Area Environmental Creation Research Center” since 2015, participating in surveys at Hayate Coast (Hannan City, Osaka Prefecture) as Prologis’s designated area, conducting cleanup activities and surveys/records of marine life distribution.
This activity has been conducted since 2007 by the “Osaka Bay Environmental Regeneration Liaison Council” with the aim of surveying coastal organisms in various areas, amid the deterioration of marine life habitats in Osaka Bay during the post-war economic growth period. It is implemented as a “simultaneous survey” across the entire bay area, involving various organizations including government and universities, as well as general citizens. Prologis was one of the first private companies to get involved in this initiative and continues to participate.
Prologis will continue to engage in various activities to contribute to the communities in the regions where it develops facilities, based on its corporate philosophy.
*“IMPACT”… An acronym combining the first letters of Prologis’s fundamental principles: “Integrity,” “Mentorship,” “Passion,” “Accountability,” “Courage,” and “Teamwork.” Volunteer activities on “IMPACT Day” embody these fundamental principles.
