About Sanyoso Main Building "Shofuu"

Sanyoso was built in 1929 as a villa for Hisaya Iwasaki, the eldest son of Yataro Iwasaki, the founder of the former Mitsubishi zaibatsu. It was constructed as a refined Sukiya-zukuri style Japanese architectural residence within a magnificent Japanese garden created by Ogawa Jihei, a gardener from Kyoto. In June 2017, it was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property by the Agency for Cultural Affairs as a valuable national treasure.

The following 7 structures have been registered as Tangible Cultural Properties:

Entrance Hall and Tea House Building, Guest Room Building, Central Building, Living Room and Study Building, Miyuki-no-ma (Imperial Visit Room), Waiting Area, Roji-mon (Garden Gate)

The Sanyoso Japanese Garden is a stroll garden of approximately 3,000 tsubo (approx. 9,900 sqm) centered around a pond.
