Hakone Sengokuhara Prince Hotel (Location: 1246 Sengokuhara, Hakone-machi, Ashigarashimo-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture; General Manager: Masaru Hosoya), conceptualized as a "living museum," will host the "Summer Edible Art Experience ~World of Crystal Hydrangeas~" from Monday, June 1, to Sunday, August 9, 2026. This is a collaborative project with the "Crystal Glass Hydrangeas" exhibition held concurrently at the Hakone Glass no Mori Museum.

In Hakone, hydrangeas are in full bloom from early summer in June to July. However, as this period falls during the rainy season, outdoor sightseeing can be restricted by the weather, limiting ways to enjoy one's stay. Therefore, this event was conceived as an indoor experience, expanding the enjoyment of hydrangeas from merely "seeing" them to "expressing them oneself."

Hydrangeas are said to have over 70 species worldwide and thousands of horticultural varieties, changing color depending on the soil and climate, making each one unique—a "flower without a single correct answer." After appreciating the crystal glass hydrangeas, guests will use their inspiration to freely create their own hydrangea sweets, using white panna cotta as a canvas and colorful jellies as hydrangea petals.

Hakone Sengokuhara is known as an art town with numerous museums. This project leverages these cultural resources, with the hotel, museum, and local community collaborating to offer a new experience that allows visitors to enjoy Hakone's hydrangeas from multiple perspectives.

■ Background of Implementation

According to meteorological data, Hakone is one of Japan's leading rainy regions, recording approximately 3,000mm of annual precipitation*1. June is considered a particularly rainy month. Indeed, in some years, rainy days in Hakone in June exceed half the month*2, indicating that tourism and activities during a stay are often affected by the weather.

Furthermore, a survey on "Outings on Rainy Days" by Asoview Co., Ltd.*3 revealed that approximately 87% of respondents had "changed or canceled outing plans due to rain," showing a growing interest in indoor activities, such as changing destinations to indoor facilities during rainy weather.

Against this seasonal backdrop, this project was inspired by the "Crystal Glass Hydrangeas" at the Hakone Glass no Mori Museum. By expanding the experience of hydrangeas from merely "seeing" them to "tasting" and "expressing them oneself," we propose a new stay experience that allows visitors to enjoy Hakone's hydrangeas in various forms.
