Izu Nagaoka Onsen Sanyo-so (Location: 270 Azenoue, Izunokuni City, Shizuoka Prefecture; General Manager: Masahiro Yoshiura) will restore the 'Tsukimidai' (moon-viewing platform) in its new building from Wednesday, May 13, 2026. The Tsukimidai, traditionally established for appreciating the moon within Japan's ancient 'Kangetsu' (moon-viewing) culture, will offer guests a unique stay experience to enjoy the moon alongside the seasonal beauty of the Japanese garden, allowing them to savor the 'Omomuki' (profound aesthetic charm) of Japan. This service is announced as one of the 'Prince Signature Experience' series (described later) that Seibu Prince Hotels & Resorts will be rolling out.

Tsukimidai

In Japan, the culture of 'Kangetsu,' or moon appreciation, has been cherished since ancient times. Spreading through court culture from the Nara to Heian periods, the moon has been passed down as a symbol of Japanese aesthetic sensibility and seasonal awareness, with people composing Waka poems while gazing at it.

The new building of Sanyo-so, where the Tsukimidai is being restored, was designed by architect Togo Murano, with the beauty of Japanese architecture harmonizing with the garden evident throughout. By restoring the Tsukimidai in this space, a unique setting is created where guests can view the moon amidst the tranquil garden scenery.

Tsukimidai

At Sanyo-so, while valuing the charm of the space created by its historic architecture and garden, we are committed to preserving and promoting the value of Japanese traditional culture by offering stay experiences that allow guests to feel the beauty and allure of Japanese culture.

What is Tsukimidai?

Tsukimidai is a space traditionally established for appreciating the moon within Japan's ancient moon-viewing culture. Often located overlooking gardens or ponds, it has been cherished as a uniquely Japanese culture for spending quiet time enjoying the moon with nature. At the time of its opening, Sanyo-so had a Tsukimidai in this very location overlooking the Japanese garden, but its presence was lost over time. This time, based on the original design and philosophy from its founding, the Tsukimidai has been restored. It revives the charm of yesteryear in the modern age and provides a space where guests can once again enjoy a serene moment woven by the moon and the garden.
