Kochia is an annual plant of the Amaranthaceae family, genus Bassia, native to the arid regions of Eurasia. Its Japanese name 'houkigusa' (broom grass) originates from the historical practice of drying its branches and stems to make brooms. Its seeds, known as 'tonburi', are edible and are sometimes called 'field caviar'. The kochia at this park are ornamental varieties, characterized by their soft, round growth and beautiful autumn foliage.

The kochia planting will take place from June 1st (Monday), involving a total of about 260 people over approximately 26 working days. On 'Miharashi no Hill', which was tilled after the nemophila were harvested, guide lines are first drawn at 70cm intervals so that the grown kochia will form a beautiful, wave-like design. Then, holes are dug at equal intervals in the soil, and small kochia seedlings, about 15cm tall, are carefully and lovingly planted one by one.
