Basic Information on Shirley Poppies
Shirley Poppies belong to the poppy family (Papaveraceae), genus Papaver, and are annual plants native to Central Europe. They produce delicate, brightly colored red and pink flowers, like Japanese paper, at the end of slender stems. They grow to a height of about 60-80 cm, and their hairy buds initially face downwards but turn upwards just before blooming. The tip of the bud then splits into two, and a flower with a diameter of about 5-8 cm blooms. Its Japanese name is "Hinageshi," and it is also known as "Coquelicot" or "Gubijinsou."

Agrostemma (photographed on May 9, 2026) Cornflower (photographed on May 11, 2026)
Agrostemma is attractive for its soft, swaying form in the wind and its lovely pink flowers. It was sown to provide a contrasting color to the blue-themed Cornflower fields. Its name comes from the Greek words "agros" (field) and "stemma" (crown), named after its lovely crown-like appearance blooming in the fields.
Cornflowers, which bloom in blue, white, pink, and red, swaying gently in the early summer breeze, were named because they resemble the "Yaguruma" (arrow wheel) attached to the tip of the carp streamers displayed for Children's Day.
