Shimane Art Museum is pleased to announce the exhibition "The 'Aftermath' of Horie Yusei Exhibition," to be held in Collection Gallery 5.
Horie Yusei (1802-1873, born in Daito [present-day Unnan City]) was a leading early modern painter in Shimane Prefecture who once enjoyed immense popularity. In 2019, our museum held a retrospective titled "Horie Yusei: The Izumo Painter Who Challenged Kyoto." This was the first large-scale exhibition on Yusei in 36 years, attracting many visitors from both inside and outside the prefecture and providing an opportunity to refocus attention on his work.
The significance of such an exhibition lies not only in honoring a painter known only to those in the know. Taking this exhibition as an opportunity, various information was received from across the country, leading to the discovery of previously unknown works by Yusei. Along with this, the collection of Yusei's works through purchase and donation, as well as the deposition of works and materials, has progressed. In particular, the deposition of the "Horie Family Heritage Materials" (approx. 240 items), a collection of vital information regarding Yusei, is gradually revealing the true figure of the artist.
This exhibition introduces the acquisition of Yusei's works and the progress of investigation and research in the "aftermath" of the 2019 Horie Yusei exhibition. We hope you will pay attention to the diverse roles played by the museum, which is more than just a place for display.
(*In his final years, Yusei changed the kanji for 'Horie' from '堀江' to '掘江,' which continues to the present day.)
[New Acquisition] Horie Yusei, "Peonies and Peacock," Museum Collection (Purchased in FY2021)... An excellent bird-and-flower painting exhibited in the 2019 Yusei exhibition. It was acquired by the museum in FY2021 following the exhibition.
