Karafuto (Sakhalin), located just north of Hokkaido. Before the war, this was Japanese territory, but after the defeat, many of the people who had lived there left Karafuto. The National Karafuto Federation, established in 1948 (Showa 23) by people repatriated from Karafuto, collected various materials, such as daily life tools and records from that time, as one of its activities to pass on the history of Karafuto to future generations. These materials are now preserved in Wakkanai City (approx. 2,300 items) and at our museum (approx. 6,500 items). We will introduce a part of these National Karafuto Federation materials to help preserve the memory of Karafuto.
