“Hilltop Hotel,” Steeped in History and Culture, Embarks on a New Chapter: Takenaka Corporation and Plan・Do・See Collaborate on “Hilltop Hotel Tokyo,” Set to Open in Summer 2027

Takenaka Corporation (President: Narito Chono) and Plan・Do・See (Representative Director and President: Shohei Asaba) are preparing for the hotel's opening in Summer 2027, aiming to pass on the historic "Hilltop Hotel" (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) to the future.

The new hotel will be named "Hilltop Hotel Tokyo" (English name: HILLTOP HOTEL TOKYO), carrying on the name of the former Hilltop Hotel. Plan・Do・See will be responsible for the hotel's operation.

On March 2nd of this year, Takenaka Corporation signed a fixed-term building lease agreement with the owner, Meiji University, and is promoting the preservation and succession project (legacy utilization project*) through its own business investment. Renovation work commenced on March 3rd of the same year.

Both companies, which have been involved in the preservation and utilization of numerous historic buildings, will proceed with the renovation of the historic building and preparations for the hotel's opening, taking into account the cultural background of the former Hilltop Hotel.

Further details about the hotel will be announced sequentially as they are decided.

Thoughts behind the hotel name "Hilltop Hotel Tokyo"

We have engaged in repeated discussions with Hilltop Hotel Co., Ltd., with the desire to weave a new story for the hotel while cherishing the many years accumulated at this location. As a result, we have been granted permission to inherit the name "Hilltop Hotel." On March 5th of this year, Takenaka Corporation signed a trademark usage agreement with Hilltop Hotel Co., Ltd., and after discussions with Plan・Do・See, decided on "Hilltop Hotel Tokyo" (English name: HILLTOP HOTEL TOKYO) as the hotel name, incorporating the Hilltop Hotel brand.

Furthermore, the main branch of "Tempura Yamanoue," operated by Hilltop Hotel Co., Ltd., is scheduled to reopen as a tenant in "Hilltop Hotel Tokyo."

We will proceed with preparations for the second chapter of "Hilltop Hotel," aiming to open as a hotel that provides new value for stays, respecting its historical and cultural value, and weaving its journey as a hotel alongside the building's succession.

Project Story

The Hilltop Hotel is a historic hotel located on a hill in Kanda Surugadai, cherished by many cultural figures such as Yasunari Kawabata, Yukio Mishima, and Shotaro Ikenami.

Its serene appearance and dignified space have been etched into the memories of many people as a fitting presence in this area, known as a town of literature and academia.

After closing entirely in February 2024, Meiji University acquired the land and buildings of the Hilltop Hotel as a project commemorating its 150th anniversary. To realize this preservation and succession project, Takenaka Corporation needed a partner capable of hotel operation that respects its historical and cultural background. Therefore, Plan・Do・See, which has a track record in regenerating historic buildings and operating hotels that emphasize storytelling, was welcomed as a partner to promote the project. Both companies will work to reconstruct value from both architectural and operational perspectives, based on the historical value and cultural background of the former Hilltop Hotel, and create a hotel that will be passed down to future generations.

Furthermore, Kanda Surugadai, Jimbocho, and the surrounding areas are home to many towns with a cultural ambiance. The aim is to consolidate the charm of these towns to be loved by local residents and to become a place that "stimulates the imagination" of people worldwide.

Reservations for stays are scheduled to begin around Autumn 2026.
