Exhibition Overview

'Artists Gathering at Cafés: From Impressionists to Van Gogh, Lautrec, and Picasso'

Dates: June 13 (Sat) – September 23 (Wed, holiday), 2026

Venue: Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum (2-6-2 Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo)

Organizers: Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, Hiroshima Museum of Art

In late 19th-century Paris, artists including Manet and those later called Impressionists gathered at cafés to debate. While modern cafés are places of relaxation, the cafés, cabarets, and dance halls of that time were not only for drinking and entertainment but also spaces for exchange and the birth of new art. This marked the beginning of a new era where art dissolved into the masses, breaking away from the Salon (official exhibition).

In 1897, Catalan painter Casas, following the famous Montmartre establishment 'Le Chat Noir', opened 'Els Quatre Gats' in Barcelona, frequented by a young Picasso. Picasso was heavily influenced by the pleasure and solitude depicted by Lautrec and Casas in café settings, leading him into his 'Blue Period'.

The exhibition showcases approximately 130 masterpieces by Impressionists, Van Gogh, Lautrec, and Picasso, along with the treasured 'Madeleine' by Casas, tracing the expansion of art born in cafés.
