[Exhibited Works] Reflection Prism Sky Carving Memento Mori 4 Breath Caprice

The concept of 'ambivalence' is at the core of Yoshitoshi Kanemaki's sculptural works. I interpret this word, which signifies the coexistence of contradictory psychology and conflicting attitudes, through my unique expression of multi-faced and multi-armed figures, materializing them as wooden sculptures. Each sculpture in this exhibition, 'Emergent Entity,' is an independent 'individual,' yet depending on their arrangement and distance within the exhibition space, changes in light and shadow, and the viewer's position and distance, they can be felt as if they are someone with emotions and presence, or even myself, creating new meanings and impressions. What is presented in this exhibition is not merely a physical form called sculpture. From the question 'What is a human being?', a more certain 'reality-entity' will emerge, 'emerging' from the relationships between the works themselves and with the viewers. ― Yoshitoshi Kanemaki

*Some works are planned for sale. Details will be announced on the official website at a later date.

[About the Work's Model] Anna Yamada Meikyo Prism The work 'Meikyo Prism,' also used in the main visual of the exhibition, was created with actor Anna Yamada as the model. Where lies the essence of Yamada, who can play a wide range of roles from a translucent girl to a difficult character with a complex inner life? The figure, captured by a sharp observational eye, is transformed into an image through a prism of intersecting personalities in Kanemaki's mind and rises as a wooden sculpture with transcendent technique. Please see the form of actor Anna Yamada, who has entered the world of Kanemaki's work, at the venue.

[Artist Profile] Yoshitoshi Kanemaki Instagram @kanemaki_yoshitoshi Born in Chiba Prefecture in 1972. After graduating from Tama Art University's Department of Sculpture, he has consistently pursued the question 'What is a human being?' by breathing his unique view of life into the organic material of wood, with themes of 'ambivalence' and 'memento mori' (life and death). His forms, which combine overlapping heads, arms, and legs, have been highly acclaimed as expressions symbolizing inner turmoil and multi-layeredness. As he has exhibited both in Japan and internationally, his works continue to sell out upon each announcement, establishing strong support in the art market. He is also expanding his presence beyond the art scene, with his works being used in collaborations with fashion brands and for book covers. He is one of the most watched wood sculptors today, continuing to update the possibilities of wood carving expression with his delicate carving and solid formative ability.

[Event] An event will be held during the exhibition period to commemorate the exhibition. Please note that some parts of the exhibition will not be viewable during each event.
