Palsystem Yamanashi Nagano Consumers' Co-operative Union (Headquarters: Kofu, Yamanashi; President: Shizuko Furuya) will hold a screening of the documentary 'Hinata no Farmers: Fukushima and Hope' on Saturday, May 23, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Jit Kofu Plaza (Kofu, Yamanashi). Now, 15 years after the nuclear accident, the film provides an opportunity to think about a sustainable future by showcasing farmers in Fukushima who are tackling both energy self-sufficiency and agriculture.

'Solar Sharing' for Self-Sufficiency in Food and Energy

The film is a documentary that tells the story of farmers who revived Fukushima farmland, which had to be abandoned due to radioactive contamination from the nuclear accident, by introducing 'solar sharing' (agrivoltaics). Solar sharing, which involves installing solar panels above farmland, also helps stabilize crop quality and prevents heatstroke for workers by blocking direct sunlight and preventing high temperatures.

The director, Mr. Obara, previously covered the dangers of nuclear power in his 2022 documentary 'The Judge Who Stopped a Nuclear Plant and the Farmers Who Stop Nuclear Plants,' featuring a former judge who continues to speak out and the people of Fukushima who are reviving abandoned farmland with solar power. This new work follows the challenge of farmer Megumi Kondo, also featured in the previous film, as she works to restore abandoned farmland through solar sharing.
