■ About "Nature Coexistence Sites" under the Act on Promotion of Regional Biodiversity Conservation
Since FY2023, the Ministry of the Environment has been certifying "areas where biodiversity conservation is achieved through private sector initiatives" as "Nature Coexistence Sites." Subsequently, in April 2025, the Act on Promotion of Regional Biodiversity Conservation came into effect, formalizing this system. As a result, when plans for biodiversity maintenance, recovery, and creation implemented by companies, NPOs, local governments, and local organizations are certified by the government, the implementation area is designated as a "Nature Coexistence Site."
"Nature Coexistence Sites" are an important mechanism for achieving "Nature Positive (stopping and reversing biodiversity loss)" and the "30by30 target (aiming to effectively conserve over 30% of land and sea as healthy ecosystems by 2030)."
■ Overview of "JX Kinzoku Copper-kun no Mori / Yoshino"
This site is part of a company-owned forest (closed/abandoned mine) managed by JX Nippon Mining & Metals Corporation, located in the mountainous region of Nanyo City, Yamagata Prefecture. It is the former operational site of the Yoshino Mine, and the "Yoshino" in the site name is derived from this old mine name. The land, once used for forestry, agriculture, and mining operations, has undergone subsequent succession to form a rural landscape environment today. The diverse mosaic environment, combining forests and grasslands established after the mine ceased operations, has high value from a biodiversity perspective. Across the entire application area, 326 plant species from 95 families and 51 bird species from 25 families and 10 orders have been confirmed. It also plays an important role as a habitat for rare species, including the grey-faced buzzard and black woodpecker. The purpose of this site is to maintain diverse rural ecosystem and to maintain its function as a habitat for rare species, and these efforts were evaluated, leading to its certification as a "Maintenance Type" site, targeting activities that maintain already biodiversity-rich areas.
