Works on display for the first time Among the works newly acquired in recent years, we have carefully selected and will be exhibiting works that fit the theme for the first time.
"Masterpieces" at your leisure A highlight corner where Yokohama Museum of Art's "masterpieces" are displayed at a relaxed pace. This time, we will also introduce works by female artists in line with the theme. In addition to familiar Dali works, we will also feature René Magritte's "The Museum of the King," which has returned from an exhibition at another museum after a long absence, and works by Surrealist female artist Meret Oppenheim. Yayoi Kusama's work (on deposit), exhibited for the first time, is also a highlight.
Overview
The Yokohama Museum of Art holds approximately 15,000 works from the late 19th century, when Yokohama opened its port, to the present day. In its collection exhibitions, the museum presents the charm of its collection from various angles during each exhibition period.
This collection exhibition features a special corner titled "She Who Crosses the Seas," focusing on women who were active across national borders from the 20th century onwards. This feature opens by looking back at the relationships between three artists, who became the first generation of female painters to engage with foreign cultures, and their families. It is followed by an introduction to works by artists who traveled from Western countries to Asia, including Japan. Their creations convey fresh surprise and perspectives on different climates and cultures. In Japan, after World War II, the country entered a period of high economic growth, and international travel was liberalized in 1964. Against this historical backdrop, many artists studied art abroad, or traveled around the world, using their experiences as inspiration for their creative work. Furthermore, from the latter half of the 20th century onwards, female artists have achieved remarkable success in international exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennale.
This exhibition traces the creative works of women who lived flexibly and powerfully on the world stage. Please pay attention to the vitality embedded in their works, born amidst the waves of globalization.
