Yokohama Noh Theater has received high acclaim for 30 years since its opening in 1996, hosting highly academic and curated performances, as well as performances, lectures, and workshops that allow a wide range of citizens to enjoy classical performing arts such as Noh and Kyogen. Having been closed for two and a half years since January 2024 for large-scale renovation work, the theater will now reopen. To commemorate this reopening, performances will be held over two days.
On the first day, Saturday, July 4th, the program will begin with "Okina" (Kanze style), a highly ritualistic piece indispensable for milestones like stage openings, performed by Kiyokazu Kanze, the head of the Kanze school. This will be followed by Mai-bayashi "Oimatsu" (Kanze style) by Bunzo Ohtsuki, a Living National Treasure; Kyogen "Suehirogari" (Okura style) by Tojiro Yamamoto, a Kyogen performer and Living National Treasure; and Noh "Kasuga Ryujin Ryujin Zokue" (Hosho style) led by Wahei Hosho, the head of the Hosho school, featuring an overwhelming spectacle with 12 dragon gods and maidens appearing on stage.
On the second day, Sunday, July 5th, the program will commence with "Okina" (Kongo style) by Eikyu Kongo, head of the Kongo school and a Living National Treasure. This will be followed by Mai-bayashi "Midare So no Mai" by Norikazu Konparu, head of the Konparu school, and former head Yasunori Konparu; Kyogen "Saiho" (Izumi style) by Man Nomura, a Kyogen performer and Living National Treasure; and Noh "Hagoromo Maikomi" (Kita style), a representative Noh play where the elegant dance of a heavenly maiden can be enjoyed, performed by Akiyo Tomoeda, entrusted by the Kita school head and a Living National Treasure.
Headmasters from the five schools of Noh and Living National Treasures will gather for two days of festive and brilliant performances to celebrate the reopening of the Yokohama Noh Theater.
