Oyatsu Company, Ltd. (Headquarters: Tsu City, Mie Prefecture; Representative Director and President: Masashi Yokoyama) has been continuously delivering “#BabyStarEverywhere” projects that transcend industries and genres, and even generations, for everyone to enjoy “together.” These projects kicked off on August 2nd, “Baby Star Day,” named after the Japanese word for snack, “oyatsu” (082).
The 23rd installment is a product conceived by Mie University students during an internship! “Baby Star Dodekai Ramen (Rich Ise Lobster Flavor with a Hint of Lemon),” featuring Mie’s local specialties, will be released nationwide for a limited time starting Monday, May 4, 2026.
Oyatsu Company launched an internship program in the summer of 2025, based on realistic work experience in product development, to foster the next generation of creators. As the first cohort, nine third-year students from Mie University’s Faculty of Bioresources participated in the internship. Instead of merely “teaching,” the program emphasized “discoveries” made by the students themselves through experience, allowing them to go through the product development process from idea generation and prototype consideration to securing approval for product launch. In the final presentation, the students’ unique idea, focused on “Mie” (triple) in a way only Mie University students could conceive, was highly evaluated, leading to the successful commercialization of the product. This product, conceived by Mie University students, will be released nationwide for a limited time starting Monday, May 4, 2026.
■The Theme is “Mie” (Triple). “Triple” Collaboration of Mie University Students x Mie Specialties x Mie Companies
The “New Product Development Internship” was conducted for a total of eight sessions from August 20 to October 27, 2025, with nine third-year students from Mie University’s Faculty of Bioresources participating. They experienced the new product development process, from brainstorming and prototype evaluation to gaining approval in a meeting presentation.
During the idea generation phase, which was conducted in three groups, many initial ideas were based on “flavors we want to eat ourselves.” However, as market and customer analysis progressed, opinions shifted to “wanting to utilize Mie Prefecture’s local specialties.” Six ideas were narrowed down to three for consideration and prototyping. Actual prototypes were made for the three ideas, and comprehensive evaluations were conducted not only on appearance, aroma, taste, and texture but also on suitability for the production line, seasonality, and uniqueness. As a result, “Rich Ise Lobster Flavor with a Hint of Lemon” was chosen, utilizing Meyer lemon, for which Mie Prefecture boasts the highest production volume, and Ise lobster, a local specialty of Mie Prefecture.
In the final product presentation, which determined the feasibility of commercialization, the students passionately presented the concept, dedication, and feelings embedded in the product, the culmination of approximately two months of effort, to the management team, including the president. The management team highly praised the product created with the unique ideas of Mie University students, and commercialization was unanimously approved.
The “Baby Star Dodekai Ramen (Rich Ise Lobster Flavor with a Hint of Lemon),” conceived by Mie University students during the internship, features a “Triple” collaboration theme, where Mie University students, together with Mie companies, developed a product using Mie Prefecture’s local specialties. With the unique sensibility and creativity of Mie University students, this snack is packed with the charm of Mie Prefecture.
