Ortho Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Kairyu Aoyama; hereinafter referred to as Ortho) conducted an "Awareness Survey on Rainy Season Fatigue" targeting 111 women in their 40s and 50s.
In recent years, "rainy season fatigue" has come to be used as a term to describe the specific lethargy and fatigue experienced during the rainy season. However, its awareness and actual impact are not yet fully understood.
This survey investigated the reality of physical discomfort during the rainy season and measures to address it.
Awareness of "Rainy Season Fatigue" Remains at 40%
First, when asked if they knew the term "rainy season fatigue," 9.0% answered "know" and 32.4% answered "have heard of it," resulting in an awareness rate of 41.4%.
On the other hand, 58.6% answered "do not know," indicating that the term has not yet fully permeated society.
About 70% Experience Physical Discomfort During Rainy Season; "Lethargy" is Most Common
When asked if they experience physical discomfort during the rainy season, 18.9% answered "often feel it" and 48.6% answered "sometimes feel it," totaling 67.5%. This indicates that about 70% experience some form of discomfort.
The specific symptoms reported were:
1st place: Lethargy (56.8%) 2nd place: Fatigue (42.3%) 3rd place: Headache (38.7%)
These were the top three.
Additionally, some respondents cited "low mood" (28.8%) and "stiff shoulders" (21.6%), suggesting that discomfort during the rainy season affects not only the body but also daily life.
Most People Are Conscious of Sleep; Over Half Feel a Decline in Sleep Quality
When asked about the measures they actually take to cope with discomfort during the rainy season, the most common answer was "sufficient sleep" (30.6%).
On the other hand, in response to the question "Do you feel that sleep quality declines during the rainy season?", 7.2% answered "strongly feel it" and 46.8% answered "somewhat feel it," totaling 54.0%. This indicates that over half of respondents feel a decline in sleep quality.
While many recognize the importance of sleep and are conscious of it, it appears that a significant number of people are struggling to achieve good quality sleep.
About 70% Report "Fatigue is Hard to Shake Off"
Regarding whether they feel that fatigue is harder to shake off than usual during the rainy season, 18.9% answered "strongly feel it" and 50.5% answered "somewhat feel it," totaling 69.4%.
Furthermore, 64.9% of respondents believe that discomfort during the rainy season affects their daytime performance, such as in work or household chores.
Discomfort during the rainy season may not only cause temporary discomfort but also impact daily life and work efficiency.
About 80% Recognize the Connection with the Autonomic Nervous System; However, One in Three Take No Action
When asked about the relationship between discomfort during the rainy season and the autonomic nervous system, 19.8% answered "strongly believe so" and 58.6% answered "somewhat believe so," totaling 78.4%. This indicates that many people recognize the connection.
However, regarding measures to address discomfort, "I don't do anything in particular" was the most common answer at 35.1%.
While many people experience discomfort and recognize its connection to the autonomic nervous system, the reality is that a significant number do not take specific measures.
Summary
This survey revealed that while many people experience lethargy and fatigue during the rainy season, a considerable number do not take specific measures.
It was also revealed that despite recognizing the importance of sleep, many people are struggling with a decline in sleep quality.
For managing physical condition during the rainy season, in addition to sufficient sleep and moderate exercise, it is also important to maintain a balanced daily diet and continuously consume necessary nutrients.
