Okumura Corporation (Headquarters: Abeno-ku, Osaka; President: Takanori Okumura) and Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture (Mayor: Kentaro Motomura; hereinafter referred to as 'Sagamihara City'), are pleased to announce the commencement of a collaborative weather resistance verification test for 'Sagamihara Tsukui Wood' within Sagamihara City to promote its utilization.
[Background]
Sagamihara City is working to promote the use of wood in public and private buildings based on the 'Sagamihara City Basic Policy for Promoting the Use of Wood in Buildings, etc.,' and is encouraging the use of 'Sagamihara Tsukui Wood.' To expand the use of this wood and promote its application as a non-residential building material, the city believes it is crucial to provide demonstration data on weather resistance when measures such as coatings are applied, in addition to basic data on the wood's inherent durability.
Against this backdrop, as part of an initiative based on the comprehensive partnership agreement concluded between the two parties in August 2024, it has been decided to conduct a weather resistance verification test for 'Sagamihara Tsukui Wood' in the Toriibara area of Miyagase Lake in Midori-ku, Sagamihara City.

[Overview of the Weather Resistance Verification Test]
A weather resistance verification test is a test that evaluates the degradation and weather resistance of specimens by placing them outdoors for a certain period and exposing them to natural environmental factors such as solar radiation, rain, and wind. In this test, specimens are prepared by applying various coatings to three types of 'Sagamihara Tsukui Wood': cedar (Sugi), zelkova (Keyaki), and Japanese oak (Konara), each measuring 70mm x 200mm.
The test site is the 'Toriibara Fureai-no-Yakata,' located in the Miyagase Lake Toriibara area, to ensure verification under an actual environment reflecting usage in buildings within Sagamihara City and to widely inform the general public about the efforts to promote the utilization of 'Sagamihara Tsukui Wood.' The specimens are attached to a pergola-like frame, with benches and tables placed underneath for visitors to rest, thus planning for both verification testing and public use.
Based on the weather resistance data obtained from this demonstration test, the parties aim to promote the utilization of 'Sagamihara Tsukui Wood' and contribute to the conservation and regeneration of Sagamihara City's forest resources and the realization of a decarbonized society.
