◆ Overview

On June 10, 2026, elementary school students from three schools in Taiwan visited the Okayama University Affiliated Elementary School, part of the National University Corporation Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City; President: Yasutomo Nasu), and conducted exchange activities with sixth-grade students.

This exchange was realized through a proposal by Professor Sung Hui-Ling of National Taiwan Normal University, who also serves as Chair of the Japan-Taiwan Science Education Exchange Association, and Mr. Ito Toshiyuki, former faculty member of Okayama University's Faculty of Education and Japan-side General Representative of the same association. The initiative was agreed upon during their visit to the university in May 2025, following discussions with理事 Yurika Mimura (in charge of Planning, Evaluation, and General Affairs),理事 Makoto Suganami (in charge of Academic Affairs) and Senior Vice President, Dr. Mitsunobu Kano (Director of the Affiliated School Organization), and Principal Kiyoshi Maeda of the Affiliated Elementary School.

The three Taiwanese elementary schools and the affiliated school had previously conducted two online exchanges (in December 2025 and May 2026). During this visit, students from Guangxing, Houhong, and Xinxing Elementary Schools in Taiwan were divided among three sixth-grade classes, participating together in recreational activities and classes.

At the beginning, representative students from the affiliated school delivered welcoming remarks in English. Though initially a bit nervous, the children gradually relaxed and began smiling during recreational games such as 'Checkpoint Break' and 'Fruit Basket.'

After the games, students from the Taiwanese schools performed songs and music familiar in Japan, including themes from Ghibli and Pokémon, deeply moving the students from the affiliated school.

Next, the Taiwanese students participated in foreign language, Japanese language, and home economics classes, engaging in joint learning activities such as calligraphy and sewing machine operation.

Through this exchange, students from the affiliated school gained valuable learning experiences and insights through direct communication with their peers from Taiwan. We invite continued attention to the initiatives of Okayama University—'an open, regional core, and distinctive research university'—and its affiliated schools.
