◆ Overview

On May 15, 2026, the Diversity Promotion Headquarters of National University Corporation Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City; President: Yasutomo Nasu) hosted a hybrid symposium themed on the career development of female researchers, titled "Diversity Research Environment Realization Initiative (Female Leader Training Type) Symposium: Okayama University's Current Status and Future in Supporting the Career Path of Female Faculty Members." Approximately 110 participants, including university faculty, staff, students, and representatives from external organizations, attended the event.

To open the event, President Yasutomo Nasu and Ms. Keiko Aihara, Director of the Office for Promotion of Human Resource Policy, Human Resources Policy Division, Science and Technology/Academic Policy Bureau of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), delivered opening remarks. This was followed by a keynote address titled "Development of Female Research Leaders as an Organizational Strategy" by Ms. Yasuko Yamamura, former Program Officer of the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). In her presentation, she introduced international trends and the current situation in Japan regarding diversity promotion, shared case studies aimed at promoting the active participation of female researchers, and expressed her expectations for Okayama University.

In addition, Professor Mayuri Inoue, Director of the Gender Equality Office, presented a mid-term report on the "Diversity Research Environment Realization Initiative (Female Leader Training Type)" which has been underway for three years. Professor Takashi Tamura, Director of the Woman Tenure Track (WTT) Division, reported on the achievements and future prospects of the WTT program over its 15-year history. Faculty members who utilized these support initiatives also shared concrete reports on the details of the support they received and their achievements.

During the subsequent panel discussion, facilitated by Associate Professor Yuko Kataoka, Deputy Director of the Gender Equality Office, Executive Director Yukari Mimura (responsible for Planning, Evaluation, and General Affairs) and representatives from the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Education, and Faculty of Law took the stage to discuss the theme "Activating the University through the Appointment of Women." They shared the current status and future outlook of each department, engaging in an active exchange of views on topics such as "Achievements, Ingenuity, and Effects in Promoting Female Faculty" and "Challenges, Barriers, and Solutions to Be Addressed for Promoting Female Faculty."

In closing, Yoko Oki, former President of Okayama Prefectural University and Professor Emeritus of Okayama University, along with Ms. Yamamura, provided comments summarizing the symposium.
