◆ Overview

On March 13, 2026, the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) hosted a public symposium at the UNU Elizabeth Rose International Conference Hall to discuss sustainability initiatives with universities participating in the SDG-University Platform (SDG-UP). Our university presented the activity outcomes of the Sustainable Campus Subcommittee as its representative.

The symposium opened with remarks by Tshilidzi Marwala, Rector of the United Nations University and UN Under-Secretary-General, followed by greetings from guest Naoko Hirayama, Director of the International Affairs Division, Minister's Secretariat, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

In Part 1, "Introduction to Subcommittee Activities and University Sustainability Activities", our university, representing the Sustainable Campus Subcommittee, introduced the draft of the "Sustainable Campus Charter". This was created to summarize the outcomes of the subcommittee's activities since FY2023. The charter includes unique SDG-UP elements such as "Network Collaboration," "Meaningful Youth Engagement & Belonging," and "Transparency & Accountability," while being designed for broad utilization by university stakeholders. Moving forward, the charter will be further refined through the subcommittee's activities.

In Part 2, "Presentations by Students of the UN SDGs Introduction Course", presentations were given by students from the University of Kitakyushu, Notre Dame Seishin University, Kwansei Gakuin University, and Nara University of Education.

Through the activities of SDG-UP, our university will continue to deepen and develop cooperation among universities, strengthen multi-generational solidarity including the youth, and share Japan's initiatives with the world. Please continue to expect great things from the initiatives of Okayama University, an open regional core and distinctive research university.
