Okabe Co., Ltd. (Location: Nanto City/Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture; Representative: Ryuichi Okabe), a general construction company based in Hokuriku/Toyama that also operates as a playground equipment manufacturer, has designed and constructed a play space in a part of the 'Wanpaku Arena' (gymnasium) on the first floor and the 'Asobiba' (play hall) on the second floor of 'Kodomo Fukka Park' (Fukaya City Children's Center), one of the largest and the city's first indoor play facilities, which opened in Fukaya City, Saitama Prefecture in April 2026. This play space is not only an inclusive space that everyone can enjoy regardless of age or disability, but it is also Japan's first playground (*according to our own research as of March 2026 / as a public indoor play space incorporating the theory of multiple intelligences) designed and constructed as a new public play facility that supports the diverse growth of children. In collaboration with Ms. Minatsu Aruga, a lecturer at the School of Transdisciplinary Science, Kanazawa University, who specializes in the theory of multiple intelligences, theoretical knowledge has been reflected in the spatial design.

■ Features of the Play Space Incorporating the Theory of Multiple Intelligences

A major feature of this play space is that it is not simply equipped with playground equipment for physical activity. Instead, experts in playground equipment and playground creation have designed the entire space based on the theory of multiple intelligences, valuing each child's 'I love it!' and 'This is fun!'. The theory of multiple intelligences does not view intelligence as a single ability but as the existence of multiple intellectual characteristics, such as 'linguistic intelligence,' 'logical-mathematical intelligence,' 'bodily-kinesthetic intelligence,' 'musical intelligence,' 'spatial intelligence,' 'interpersonal intelligence,' 'naturalist intelligence,' and 'intrapersonal intelligence.'

In its pursuit of creating playground equipment that contributes to children's growth, Okabe has emphasized creating an environment that draws out the diverse strengths of each child through natural play, without being biased toward specific abilities. Based on the concept of the theory of multiple intelligences, children's individual 'likes,' such as 'I like to exercise,' 'I like playing with everyone,' and 'I like to imagine,' are categorized and positioned as eight characteristics of a child's sensibility. This play space was developed by considering how these eight characteristics connect with which playground equipment, ensuring that each intelligence is nurtured in a balanced way.

■ What is the Theory of Multiple Intelligences?

The theory of multiple intelligences, proposed by American psychologist Howard Gardner, is the idea that people have eight different intelligences, and the combination of these creates each individual's personality. It posits that diverse abilities such as bodily-kinesthetic, musical, spatial, interpersonal, naturalist, and intrapersonal intelligence exist independently, in addition to linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligence. This theory emphasizes an approach to education that utilizes the unique strengths and characteristics of each individual. Play is considered an opportunity to naturally stimulate and nurture these diverse intelligences.

■ Joint Research with Ms. Minatsu Aruga of Kanazawa University

Okabe Co., Ltd. is engaged in joint research on children's growth and learning through play with Ms. Minatsu Aruga, a lecturer at the School of Transdisciplinary Science, Kanazawa University, who specializes in the theory of multiple intelligences. For the design of this play space, Ms. Aruga reviewed the completed space based on her research knowledge and provided an evaluation from a professional perspective. We will continue our joint research with Ms. Aruga and strive to create play spaces that bring out the diverse abilities of children.
