Can changing work clothes change the atmosphere of a factory? Ohmiya Co., Ltd. (Location: Higashiosaka City, Osaka; CEO: Hiroki Michino) is developing "Colorful Factory," an initiative born from that very question.
■The Concept of "Uniforms" Changing the Factory Atmosphere
A factory, the site of manufacturing, is a place where many people work together to create value. However, it is not uncommon for it to be perceived as "dark" or "closed." We wondered if this impression affected not only the working environment but also interpersonal relationships, potentially making it difficult to attract talent. Therefore, we focused on the work clothes (uniforms) worn every day. We believed that uniforms, which are always visible, could influence the office atmosphere.
Initiatives Starting from Uniforms
This is how "Colorful Factory" began. The uniforms are bright and pop working wear inspired by Nordic design. They are available in four colors—red, blue, green, and yellow—with teams assigned to each color. By belonging to a color team separate from their departments, employees naturally start conversations even with colleagues they rarely interact with. Furthermore, a "Sorting Helmet Ceremony" is held for new hires, where their color is decided by a helmet-shaped lottery box, creating an environment where it's easy to join communication right after entering the company. This initiative has been developed with industry-academia collaboration with Osaka Cultural Fashion College and has received approval for the Management Innovation Plan of Osaka Prefecture.
Changes Brought by Uniforms
Starting with uniforms, gradual changes are occurring within the company. Communication between employees who previously had little contact has increased, and cross-departmental greetings are now a daily occurrence. The sense of distance within the company has changed, making the overall atmosphere brighter. There's also a positive shift in the mindset toward work, and though it's a small step, it has become a catalyst for changing relationships.
■Building on This Foundation Toward the Future
Through the "Colorful Factory" initiative, Ohmiya Co., Ltd. has reviewed the nature of the organization itself. Building on these positive changes, the company sees growth potential in new business areas and has joined the "10 Billion Yen Declaration" promoted by the Small and Medium Enterprise Agency, aiming for a revenue scale of 10 billion yen.
Coinciding with this declaration, we have formulated a corporate vision toward 2035. This vision aims for sustainable growth by strengthening existing business competitiveness while expanding into promising new areas.
In our vision, we uphold three pillars:
- "Colorful Factory": Beyond just being colorful, an organization where diverse talent thrives regardless of gender, age, or nationality.
- "Deliciousness": Providing delicious food and ingredients to the local community from morning to night.
- "Copper Alloy Professionals": A group of pros in manufacturing and wholesale of copper alloys.
Among these, Colorful Factory symbolizes building an organization where diverse talent can play an active role. Using this activity that started with uniforms as a foundation, we will further promote the creation of an organization that utilizes each individual's personality.
By expanding this initiative, we aim for sustainable corporate growth and a world where employees, their families, local communities, suppliers, and customers—everyone involved—can smile.
