Can changing work clothes change the atmosphere of a factory? Omiya Co., Ltd. (Location: Higashiosaka City, Osaka Prefecture; Representative Director: Hiroki Michino) is developing the 'Colorful Factory' initiative, born from that very question.
### ■The Idea of 'Uniforms' Changing the Factory Atmosphere
A factory, as a frontline of manufacturing, is a place where many people collaborate to create value.
However, on the flip side, it is not uncommon for factories to bear a 'dark' or 'closed-off' image. We hypothesized that this impression might affect not only the working environment but also the relationships among people. We thought this could be one of the factors making it difficult to attract talent. Therefore, we focused on the work clothes (uniforms) worn every day. Uniforms are something inherently visible in daily life, and we believed that changing them would directly influence the mood of the workplace.
### Initiatives Sparked by the Uniforms
Thus began the 'Colorful Factory.' The Colorful Factory uniforms are bright, pop-style working garments inspired by Nordic design. They are available in four colors: red, blue, green, and yellow, with teams assigned to each color. By belonging to a color team separate from their formal departments, employees who rarely interact naturally find opportunities to converse. Additionally, when joining the company, new hires participate in a 'Sorting Helmet Ceremony,' drawing their assigned color from a helmet-shaped box. This creates an environment where new graduates and mid-career hires can easily join in communication immediately after joining. This initiative has been advanced through industry-academia collaboration with the Osaka Institute of Fashion and with approval from Osaka Prefecture's Management Innovation Plan.
