Fostering Cross-Cultural Understanding Through International Exchange
On Monday, June 29, Nagoya University of Commerce and Business (NUCB) hosted an international exchange program for 8 students from its Global BBA program and exchange students, who visited Aino-yama Elementary School in Nisshin City and interacted with 6th graders. This program provided a valuable opportunity for international students and the children to deepen their understanding of different cultures by sharing aspects of their respective cultures and daily lives.
The international students, hailing from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Ukraine, and Bangladesh, presented on their home countries using photos and slides, covering topics such as daily life, culture, traditions, tourist attractions, and food. Some students challenged themselves by explaining in Japanese, while others incorporated unique elements reflecting their individual personalities, making the presentations relatable and diverse. The children listened attentively and actively asked questions, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere throughout the event.
International Students and Children Share Their Cultures
During the international students' presentations, they showcased beautiful landscapes, unique national cultures, sports, and cuisine, captivating the children who listened with interest, exclaiming in surprise and delight. Following the presentations, a dynamic Q&A session took place, fostering a deeper understanding not only of national and cultural differences but also of commonalities.
Subsequently, the 6th graders presented on Japan. Each group shared aspects of Japanese culture, history, food, and contemporary pop culture, incorporating English into their presentations, which included songs and creative delivery. The international students were impressed by the children's proactive English presentations and deepened their exchange by asking each other questions.
Through this exchange, the international students gained a better understanding of Japanese elementary education and community connections, while the children had a valuable experience of directly encountering foreign cultures and values. The event concluded with the children gathering outside the school building to see the students off, waving goodbye and expressing their reluctance to part, marking it as a memorable international exchange for everyone involved.
Degree Programs Offered in English: Global BBA
NUCB established the "Global BBA" undergraduate program, which operates entirely in English, as a collaborative program across its Faculties of Economics, Business Administration, and Commerce, a first for a private university. The environment, where students learn alongside international students from around the world, is akin to studying abroad. All Global BBA classes are taught using the "case method," simulating real-world business decision-making, aiming to cultivate international leaders capable of proposing their ideas to society through an international and inquiry-based learning approach.
