NTT SmartConnect Corporation (Headquarters: Osaka, Osaka Prefecture; President: Kento Miyaoku; hereinafter "NTT SmartConnect") has launched a new "AI Ransomware Protection" menu for its cloud-based storage service, "Smart Storage."

As ransomware damage and unknown cyberattacks become increasingly severe, traditional countermeasures are proving difficult to rely on, making it an urgent priority for companies to build robust data protection and rapid recovery systems. The "AI Ransomware Protection" menu is a solution where an AI model integrated into the storage detects ransomware attacks in real-time and protects data. By adding autonomous protection at the storage layer to existing endpoint and network layer measures, it is now possible to protect customer systems more securely.

1. Background and Purpose

In recent years, cyberattacks targeting companies, particularly those involving ransomware, have become more severe, evolving into situations that threaten not only data encryption but business continuity itself. Unknown malware (zero-day attacks) is also on the rise, and cases that cannot be prevented by traditional pattern-matching countermeasures are increasing. To solve these issues, NTT SmartConnect has launched the "AI Ransomware Protection" menu for "Smart Storage," which utilizes AI-based behavioral detection. By using this service, even if a ransomware intrusion occurs, the damage can be minimized at the storage layer, enabling rapid and safe data recovery.

2. Overview and Features

"AI Ransomware Protection" is a solution that detects ransomware attacks in real-time and protects data on the volumes of "Smart Storage" used by customers.

The main features are as follows:

① High-precision, real-time attack detection

The system constantly monitors storage I/O behavior (such as file entropy, file extensions, and sudden spikes in IOPS) using AI. It is equipped with a pre-trained AI model capable of accurate detection immediately after deployment, making it effective against unknown zero-day attacks. Because it operates on the storage, it provides low-latency detection without conflicting with client-side anti-malware software.

② Minimization of damage through automatic snapshot acquisition

When a ransomware attack (threats such as file encryption) is detected, a snapshot is immediately and automatically taken to protect the data before the damage spreads. Additionally, upon detection, a notification email is sent to a pre-designated administrator.

③ Secure data retention and rapid recovery in read-only areas

The acquired snapshot area is "read-only," so it cannot be written to (encrypted) by ransomware. Customers can select any restore point from periodically or immediately acquired snapshots and flexibly restore data on a file-by-file basis.
