NTT West Group and Mainichi Broadcasting System conducted a proof-of-concept experiment for immersive public viewing in late March 2026. The experiment used the IOWN All-Photonics Network, or IOWN APN, to verify the usefulness of next-generation video delivery for creating new sports-viewing experiences. The initiative aims to let people in remote locations feel united with the live venue, helping revitalize local communities and creating opportunities to experience sports culture beyond geographic constraints. The trial combined IOWN APN’s ultra-low-latency, high-capacity transmission with 8K wide video and spatial audio technologies, creating an immersive environment that transfers the energy and sound of the venue to a remote location almost as if the entire space were being transported. At the public-viewing venue, the partners created what they call a “second cheering seat,” distinct from conventional monitor-based viewing. A three-screen panoramic display of more than 300 inches delivered 8K visuals, conveying not only the players’ movement but also the atmosphere of the bench and cheering sections. By minimizing lag with IOWN APN, the remote venue synchronized with the cheers and clapping at the live venue, creating a shared sense of excitement without perceptible delay. The trial also used open-ear devices to provide an acoustic XR experience, layering live commentary over the real venue sound without blocking conversations or ambient atmosphere. This created a viewing experience similar to having a personal commentator nearby. Astrodesign provided the 8K wide camera and video compositing system, including venue filming, three-screen image synthesis, distortion correction, blending correction, picture-in-picture support, and display control. NTT Sonority provided the nwm ONE open-ear overhead ear speaker. Following the experiment, NTT West Group plans to promote nationwide deployment of an immersive space-sharing model capable of delivering even the atmosphere of live venues, working with related organizations to expand new forms of regional revitalization and shared emotional experiences through ICT.
