2. Exhibition Concept

"ICC Annual" is an exhibition that features diverse forms of expression in contemporary media environments, including media art. It has been held as the long-term exhibition "ICC Annual" since fiscal year 2022, succeeding the concept of the "Open Space" exhibition held from fiscal year 2006 to 2021. This year's "ICC Annual 2026" considers the relationship between history, technology, and media.

In the contemporary media environment, with the advancement of technologies such as generative AI, information is created and distributed at unprecedented speed and scale. Within this context, the information we encounter is also selected and reconfigured by algorithms. In such an information environment, it seems that the very framework of what is recorded and how it is shared is changing. History and memory also have the potential to be updated in real-time, and sometimes they are rewritten under political and economic dynamics.

Therefore, this exhibition focuses on the relationship between history, technology, and media, considering how they have been involved in the formation of history and memory, and also reflecting on the act of "leaving behind/remaining" itself. It features works that can be interpreted from various perspectives, such as the structures of selection and exclusion inherent in recording media, the circulation of images in the digital environment and the dynamics at play there, and even communication methods that have fallen outside the framework of perception since Western modernity. Additionally, works that bring a new perspective to the transmission of memory, even if they do not directly refer to history, are included. Through these works, the exhibition aims to grasp the relationship between media and history from multiple angles.

This exhibition re-examines the nature of history and memory through the question of what is left behind and how we receive what remains.
