Nippon Steel Kowa Real Estate Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and Representative Director: Masahiro Miwa) will conduct the urban green space demonstration experiment "Shinagawa FOR REST 2026 Spring" at Shinagawa Central Garden from May 11 (Monday) to May 24 (Sunday), 2026.
Shinagawa Central Garden is a vast pedestrian space approximately 45m wide, 400m long, and 2ha in area, extending north-south between the Shinagawa Intercity and Shinagawa Grand Commons buildings, adjacent to Shinagawa Station. The site is planted with approximately 290 tall trees, as well as shrubs and ground cover, making it a rare lush green space among urban green areas close to major terminal stations in Tokyo.
To unleash the potential of Shinagawa Central Garden as an urban green space, since the launch of "Shinagawa FOR REST" in 2024, the company has been creating "Well-being rich ways to spend time" in the urban office district. As a demonstration experiment, placemaking such as standing counters, long tables, reclining chairs, and lawn spaces has been gradually implemented, along with content that allows for a more fulfilling time in the green space, such as health promotion events, pet events, food provision, and flea markets.
"Shinagawa FOR REST 2026 Spring," to be held this time, will continue with the concept of "A Moment of Rejuvenation in the Office District Oasis." Based on the needs identified from past initiatives, measures will be provided from both hardware and software aspects to further enhance user satisfaction at Shinagawa Central Garden. Through the "Shinagawa FOR REST" initiatives, we aim to unleash the potential of Shinagawa Central Garden as an urban green space and contribute to the area branding of the Shinagawa area where Shinagawa Central Garden is located.

■ Results of Past Shinagawa FOR REST
In "Shinagawa FOR REST 2024" and "Shinagawa FOR REST 2025," under joint research with Obayashi Corporation, a survey was conducted comparing the demonstration experiment periods (October 4 to November 3, 2024, and May 12 to May 31, 2025) with normal usage (September 30, 2024). As a result, remarkable achievements were obtained: the number of users increased by approximately 4.0 times and the number of activities by approximately 4.5 times during the period when mechanisms for actively utilizing the green space were implemented, compared to normal times.
In addition, a survey was conducted among Shinagawa Central Garden users for five weekdays during the demonstration experiment period (10:00-16:00, October 6-10, 2025). When asked about the "degree of attachment to the Shinagawa area due to Shinagawa FOR REST," approximately 68% responded "significantly increased" and approximately 30% responded "somewhat increased," indicating a very positive response.
In fiscal year 2026, we aim to further improve the value of stay through hardware updates utilizing these results.
■ Initiatives for "Shinagawa FOR REST 2026 Spring"
① Renewal to a design that induces diverse activities
This renewal will transform the design to a calm tone, better suited for well-being time. Centered on the themes of "FOREST" and "FOR REST" of Shinagawa FOR REST, Shinagawa Central Garden will be reconstructed as a space where one can feel nature even in the city center.
By significantly increasing the number of seats and creating steps on the deck, diverse activities such as sitting, working, and conversing will be induced.

The deck used incorporates woodification units made 100% from SATO COMPANY's upcycled pallet "MARUPA" and Nishikawa Baum LLC's "Nishikawa Wood" from Saitama Prefecture. This design is intended to be "used continuously," meaning it can be reused for other purposes without being discarded after the demonstration experiment, presenting a sustainable urban green space that reduces environmental impact.
② Creation of night vibrancy and circulation with the concept of "creating a nightscape"
Regarding the night lighting of Shinagawa Central Garden, we will collaborate with Takasho Digitec Co., Ltd., a specialized outdoor lighting manufacturer, with the concept of "creating a nightscape." This plan adopts the tree spot type of the small spotlight series "DIA-30," which can be directly fixed to tree trunks, achieving a calm brightness in the night landscape, blending into the trees during the day, and creating a gentle, light-filled scene at night where only light spills out.
