Students from the Esports Business Department of the International Art & Design College (A&D) of NSG Group participated as operational staff in "EVO Japan 2026," one of the world's largest fighting game events, held at Tokyo Big Sight from Friday, May 1 to Sunday, May 3, 2026.
This year marks the fourth time that our college has participated in providing operational support for "EVO Japan," having been the first vocational school nationwide to do so since 2023. By continuously engaging in the field of large-scale esports events, students are able to apply the knowledge learned in classes to practical situations, acquiring the responsiveness and sense of responsibility required on-site.
"EVO Japan" is a representative large-scale event in the esports scene, bringing together top players from Japan and overseas, as well as fighting game fans. At the venue, which welcomes many visitors and participants, reliable operational capabilities are required to support the smooth progress of the tournament, including the setup of equipment for the competitive environment, accurate management, and rapid tear-down.
This time, our students were responsible for setting up competitive equipment such as monitors, PlayStation 5 consoles, and headphones used within the venue. Furthermore, they were involved in important tasks that affect the quality of event operations, including tear-down work after the tournament, loading equipment, and cross-referencing monitor and PlayStation 5 unit numbers.
Working at a large venue like Tokyo Big Sight involves long distances and demands accuracy and speed within limited time. Leveraging the experience gained from previous operational support, the students collaborated as a team, approaching each task with a strong sense of responsibility.
■Student comments on their participation
"It was tough, but the sense of accomplishment made it worthwhile."
"Watching the EVO finals, I truly felt that the environment we set up was supporting the tournament."
"I was able to fully demonstrate my abilities, which boosted my confidence."
Additionally, a second-year student commented, "I was a bit anxious as I now had junior students, but I was able to stand firm as a senior. I could also pass on my experience to my juniors." A third-year student shared, "This was my last participation, but compared to last year, the speed of setup and tear-down improved, and I was able to support my juniors. I felt my own growth as I could proceed with the event smoothly and without errors." These comments highlight the growth experienced through continuous participation.
This fourth instance of operational support is not merely event assistance but an integral part of practical education that supports world-class esports events from behind the scenes. For players and spectators to enjoy the tournament with peace of mind, reliable behind-the-scenes operations, such as equipment setup, management, and tear-down, are indispensable, not just the front-stage activities.
Moving forward, our college will continue to foster human resources equipped with the judgment, sense of responsibility, and teamwork required on-site, through practical opportunities to engage with the forefront of the esports industry.
