[Niigata University of Health and Welfare] Holds "Team Medical Care Experience Session" for High School Students to Learn About Interprofessional Collaboration!

Niigata University of Health and Welfare, part of the NSG Group, held a "Team Medical Care Experience Session" on Thursday, March 26, targeting high school students aiming for careers in health, medical care, welfare, and sports. Approximately 140 high school students from 13 high schools inside and outside Niigata Prefecture participated.

Our university promotes "High School-University-Medical Collaboration" to provide opportunities for high school students to think more deeply about their future career paths, including outreach lectures, vocational experience programs, and hospital tours to observe actual medical settings. As part of these initiatives, we held the "Team Medical Care Experience Session" to learn about the collaboration and cooperation required in the fields of health, medical care, welfare, and sports.

In the morning, high school students were divided into groups based on their desired qualifications and professions. They received lectures from our university's faculty members about the roles and attractions of each profession, such as nurses, physical therapists, and registered dietitians, and deepened their understanding through related hands-on experiences. They also learned how each profession collaborates and contributes within team medical care.

In the afternoon, based on the knowledge gained in the morning, they participated in group work with the theme of interprofessional collaboration. They discussed what kind of treatment and support could be provided from the perspective of each profession for the presented case studies, and each group presented their findings. Participants experienced firsthand the challenges and rewards of collaborating with other professions, further deepening their understanding of "team medical care."

The ability to hold such experience sessions is unique to our university, one of Japan's largest comprehensive medical universities with six faculties and 16 departments gathered on a single campus, providing an environment for practical learning of "team medical care." We will continue to support high school students in their career choices by promoting high school-university-medical collaboration.
