What is the "Parkinson's Disease QOL Fund"?
Parkinson's disease is one of the designated intractable diseases, said to affect 150,000 to 200,000 patients in Japan. Currently, with advances in cutting-edge medical research, gene therapy and regenerative medicine treatments are being developed and are moving towards practical application. The mechanism of onset is also gradually being elucidated, and earlier diagnosis and initiation of treatment are expected.
However, it is anticipated that it will still take time before patients can confidently say it is a "curable disease." Parkinson's disease is a difficult illness for both patients and their close ones, as they live with symptoms alleviated by medication over many years.
Opportunities for effective treatment to suppress disease progression in the early stages, access to information about the disease and treatment, and the establishment of an environment for support collaboration, as well as resources for these, are not sufficient. Steady support by medical professionals and patients, attempts at new tools and services, and research for these efforts are already underway. It is hoped that these initiatives will spread and reach many patients.
This fund was established with the desire to expand support that enables Parkinson's disease patients to live more comfortably and longer lives. We provide grants for all initiatives that contribute to improving the QOL of patients.
