Shoeisha Participates in Demonstration of note's GENIAC Project

Shoeisha Co., Ltd. has joined the GENIAC project, led by note, as a new demonstration partner. This project is an initiative selected under the "GENIAC" (Generative AI Accelerator Challenge) project, implemented by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to promote the development of generative AI.

Shoeisha is a publisher that has long disseminated highly specialized knowledge rooted in practical experience, focusing on publishing books and operating web media in fields such as IT, business, and design. Their strong agreement with the project's vision of building an ecosystem where creators and media can deliver content with peace of mind, even in the AI era, led to this participation.

In this participation, Shoeisha's highly accurate factual information, primarily from their IT and business-focused specialized and practical books and web media, will be utilized to verify a system for securely referencing (viewing) this information during the demonstration period through RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation: a technology where AI refers to external data when generating answers). It is important to note that this data will not be used to train generative AI, but will only be temporarily referenced when generating answers.

This project is advancing demonstrations using the content of each partner, based on a prototype RAG database that has already been completed, to improve its accuracy. With the addition of Shoeisha's specialized expertise, the verification towards building a distribution infrastructure will be further promoted.

Cooperating in the verification of management functions for data holders (rights holders)

Cooperating in the creation of legal and practical systems (technical and practical verification) to balance the protection of rights for published content with appropriate compensation for rights holders

About the GENIAC Project and "RAG Data Ecosystem"

This project was selected as the "Survey Project on the Utilization of Data and Generative AI for Accelerating Generative AI Development" within "GENIAC (Generative AI Accelerator Challenge)," a project by METI and NEDO aimed at strengthening domestic generative AI development capabilities. This project will be carried out with a project period of 1 year and a budget of up to 1.5 billion yen (※).

(※) If an extension of the survey period or an increase in the budget is separately approved, the project period can be extended to 2 years (however, until December 2027 at the latest) with a budget limit of up to 2 billion yen.

This project will build a database that allows AI to reference high-quality content held by publishers, academic organizations, news organizations, web media, etc., when generating answers, by utilizing RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) technology.

Regarding content candidates, to ensure accuracy and proper rights processing, the scope will be limited to factual information such as "news," "dictionaries," "practical books," "new books," "economics and business," and "money investment," where accuracy and source citation are valued. This excludes areas like "stories (fiction)" which require particular consideration from the perspective of existing copyright protection.
