NOT A HOTEL Inc. (Chuo-ku, Tokyo, hereinafter "NOT A HOTEL") will open "NOT A HOTEL SETOUCHI" on Sagi Island, Mihara City, Hiroshima Prefecture, on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.

"NOT A HOTEL SETOUCHI" is the first architectural work in Japan completed by BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group), led by world-renowned architect Bjarke Ingels. It features three villas, "180," "270," and "360," inspired by "angles" and offering views of the calm sea and the beautiful multi-island landscape of the Seto Inland Sea.

The architecture, planned to resonate with the nature of Sagi Island, a remote island floating in the Seto Inland Sea, captures the scenery from different angles, creating a unique stay experience specific to this land. It is a new base that extends beyond the beauty of the architecture itself, seamlessly designing the travel time to the island, activities to deeply enjoy the charm of the land, and dining experiences.

In recent years, the Setouchi area has been gaining prominence as a destination visited by many people from Japan and overseas for art and culture. "NOT A HOTEL SETOUCHI" was born on Sagi Island, a scenic and beautiful remote island among the Geiyo Islands floating in the Seto Inland Sea.

The architectural design was handled by BIG, led by Bjarke Ingels. In this project, which is BIG's first completed architectural work in Japan, an innovative design based on a circular motif was adopted to reinterpret the Setouchi landscape and allow nature and architecture to merge.

The three villas built on the southwestern cape of Sagi Island are named "360," "270," and "180" according to their position and corresponding views. Each villa captures the spectacular scenery of the Seto Inland Sea from a different angle, providing a unique view and spatial experience that can only be found here.

The architecture integrates elements inspired by traditional Japanese single-story houses with modern structures and designs. The glass facade connecting the interior and exterior is a modern interpretation of shoji screens, and the floor design incorporates the concept of traditional tatami layouts. Furthermore, the curved earthen walls utilize the rammed earth technique with local soil, instilling a texture that evokes the regional character in the space. It is a work unique to BIG, where local materiality and cutting-edge architectural philosophy coexist.
