Nordic Semiconductor, a global leader in low-power wireless connectivity solutions, announced at Embedded World 2026 the launch of 'Nordic Fuel Gauge v2.0,' a significant update to its high-precision, software-based battery state management solution for the award-winning nPM1300 and nPM1304 power management ICs (PMICs).

This update adds advanced State-of-Health (SoH) estimation, adaptive battery models, and long-term fleet analytics, extending sophisticated battery management to a wide range of power-constrained IoT products.

Nordic Fuel Gauge v2.0 helps manufacturers develop more reliable, sustainable, and longer-lasting products while enabling compliance with newly strengthened battery replacement regulations. This includes the EU Battery Regulation (2023/1542), which mandates that batteries must be easily removable and replaceable by end-users at any time during the product's lifetime. With this announcement, manufacturers can accurately determine when a battery needs replacement, supporting 'Right to Repair' initiatives while improving product reliability and reducing warranty costs.

Geir Kjosavik, Director of PMIC Product Management at Nordic Semiconductor, stated: "Actual battery behavior in the field rarely matches lab measurements. With Fuel Gauge v2.0, we are bringing adaptive, real-world intelligence—previously limited to high-end consumer devices—to the IoT sector. This will be a game-changer for billions of battery-powered devices."

Fleet-wide Battery Intelligence via nRF Cloud with Memfault Integration

Fuel Gauge v2.0 integrates seamlessly with Nordic's cloud lifecycle service, 'nRF Cloud powered by Memfault.' Devices can automatically report State-of-Health (SoH), State-of-Charge (SoC), and various performance metrics without the need for proprietary cloud infrastructure. This allows engineering and operations teams to monitor battery status across an entire fleet, detect anomalies, optimize charging parameters, and improve future hardware designs based on real-world data.

François Baldassari, founder of Memfault and VP of Software Services at Nordic Semiconductor, commented: "Memfault was designed to help every hardware team leverage advanced device insights. By seamlessly connecting Fuel Gauge v2.0 with nRF Cloud, companies gain a powerful and scalable means to understand and improve device behavior across their entire fleet. This is the future of battery intelligence."

Geir Kjosavik added: "With Fuel Gauge v2.0, we are bringing real-world adaptive intelligence to the IoT sector that was previously limited to high-end consumer devices."

New Battery Monitoring Method for High-Precision Lifespan Prediction

Building on the high-precision State-of-Charge (SoC) measurement achieved in Fuel Gauge v1.0, v2.0 introduces an adaptive model that continuously compares the battery's initial profile with actual usage behavior. This enables accurate estimation of battery State-of-Health (SoH), tracking of charge/discharge cycles, and long-term degradation trends, maintaining consistent accuracy throughout the product's life even as the battery ages. For devices that use multiple interchangeable batteries, the SoH of each individual battery can be managed separately.

Traditional battery management ICs rely on fixed models or coulomb counting, which tend to accumulate errors over time. In contrast, Nordic's approach does not require a dedicated battery management IC; it operates by combining the voltage, temperature, and current measurement features built into the nPM1300 with advanced host-side algorithms. This achieves accuracy equivalent to dedicated ICs at a lower cost, reducing the Bill of Materials (BOM) and simplifying the system. Furthermore, it consumes zero power during sleep mode, offering significant power savings compared to competing solutions.

Fuel Gauge v2.0 can run on any host MCU or wireless SoC, including the nRF54 and nRF91 series, and even non-Nordic hosts, allowing OEMs to implement advanced battery intelligence in almost any connected device.
