Comment from Junko Genma, President and CEO of noos Inc.
It is in the non-everyday experience of travel that people become more honest than usual.
Here, we want you to gently touch those soft parts of your heart – the true feelings and values that you might be too embarrassed to express and keep hidden deep inside.
With that in mind, we designed the space at VOMA.
The answer to happiness always lies in human relationships. Family, partners, close friends – precisely because they are the closest, time spent engaging with them thoughtfully is necessary. At VOMA, we hope you will spend relaxed time connecting with your loved ones.
Comment from Ryohei Baba, Architect (Co-representative of OOOarchitecture)
Hotels are typically spaces that offer an experience of the extraordinary, detached from everyday life. When the exterior is not nature or a beautiful cityscape, architecture often achieves this by shutting out the outside and creating an introspective world. Hyakunincho is not a beautiful cityscape, but it possesses a chaotic, human, and exciting charm. We considered whether it was possible to create a hotel that preserves a protected sense of comfort while still feeling this real city. We thought, "Can we create a hotel where this contradiction coexists?"
The floor plan features a cavern-like hall space that penetrates the frontage, appearing as a void in the densely built city. The living area, located at the very back, is lowered by 300mm to avoid the northern daylight obstruction line. This deepest part, where the floor sinks, offers a unique experience of being in a quiet space distanced from the city's chaos, while simultaneously observing that chaos. To achieve an appropriate distance for switching activities between the hall and the adjacent bedroom, a long, narrow water area space is inserted between them. This three-layer composition of hall, water area, and bedroom means that movement occurs through a passage that pierces the water area. This passage brings depth and complexity to the not-so-spacious guest rooms.
On the terrace facing the street, overlooking the city, the handrail is made of a thick 180mm square cypress wood. Its substantial presence is intended to create a boundary, providing a sense of security that connects and separates the inside and outside simultaneously.
For the interior, we selected simple and plain materials to perceive a contrasting quietness as a void within the bustling city. Textured materials that bring a hotel-like allure, such as tiles, jute, and wood, were chosen, with adjustments to their color and the area of their use, aiming to add depth to the quietness.
We aimed for a stay where guests can feel the unique atmosphere of this city while spending quiet, quality time.
