■ Jiro Takidaira (1921–2009) Born in Ibaraki Prefecture

Born in Ibaraki Prefecture in 1921. After serving as a substitute teacher at an elementary school post-war, he established himself as a woodblock artist through self-study.

In the 1960s, he began to seriously work in publishing art, and his unique "paper-cut art," rich in poetic sentiment, became a social phenomenon after being serialized in newspapers. Furthermore, the picture books he created in collaboration with children's literature author Ryusuke Saito became pioneers of large-format picture books in Japan and continue to be read across generations today.

He passed away in 2009 at the age of 88. His legacy includes thousands of works, such as woodblock prints, original paper-cut art, original picture book illustrations, and drawings. Even after his death, exhibitions of his works continue to be held at museums and galleries nationwide.
