Mitsui Ocean Fuji will operate the "Golden Week Japan Round-the-World Cruise" departing from and arriving in Yokohama from April 29 (Wed) to May 10 (Sun), 2026. During its call at Nanao, Ishikawa Prefecture, on May 4 (Mon), it will conduct a port-of-call tour to visit the Wajima Morning Market, which is currently holding an outreach event in Wajima City in the northern Noto Peninsula, an area affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake that occurred on January 1, 2024, and the Ishikawa Wajima Urushi Art Museum, which introduces Wajima Lacquerware. In addition to the tour, onboard lectures will be given by a "Utsuwa Sommelier" from the "General Incorporated Association Shiru, Tanoshimu ~ Japan," which issues Utsuwa Sommelier qualifications, and by Wajima City administrative officials who will speak about the reconstruction of Wajima and the charm of the town. Furthermore, at the pier of Nanao Port, with the cooperation of Nanao City and Wajima City, local products will be sold, offering special plans that can only be experienced on this cruise, together with the local community.
Our company has frequently called at Nanao and Kanazawa even before the earthquake, and we have been warmly welcomed by many people in the region with "Kimasshi" (please come again). We planned this port-of-call tour and onboard events hoping that our customers' visits on our operating vessel would contribute even a little to the reconstruction of Wajima City.
The tour will first allow you to enjoy visiting and shopping at the Wajima Morning Market, which is currently holding an outreach event at Wai Plaza Wajima. At this morning market, which boasts a 1000-year history, you can purchase fresh seafood and local specialty souvenirs and interact with the local people who are supporting Wajima today. For lunch, you will enjoy dishes made with many local ingredients at a restaurant in the city, savoring the local taste. After lunch, you will visit the Ishikawa Wajima Urushi Art Museum, which introduces Wajima Lacquerware, a representative Japanese lacquer art. You can appreciate "Earth at Night," a special lacquer art piece created over five years, bringing together the advanced techniques of Wajima Lacquerware, and experience the "beauty," "technique," and "spirit" of Wajima Lacquerware.
In addition, an "Utsuwa Sommelier" from the "General Incorporated Association Shiru, Tanoshimu ~ Japan" will conduct a lecture on Wajima Lacquerware onboard and will also accompany the port-of-call tour. Wajima City administrative officials will give lectures onboard aiming to make customers interested in "Wajima itself," not limited to the current state of damage and reconstruction, but also the inherent charm of Wajima, the people who are moving forward, and the future Wajima aims for. The ability to experience the history and techniques of Wajima's local specialties and the town of Wajima itself, while listening directly to experts and locals, is also a charm of this cruise.
Furthermore, at the pier of Nanao Port, Wakura Town Development Co., Ltd. from Wajima City will specially sell Wajima Lacquerware, Wajima Cider, and products using Ishiru, and Noto Shokusai Market from Nanao City will sell local specialties and famous products such as Noto sweets, Japanese candles, and soy sauce. With the cooperation of both cities, we have realized content that allows customers who do not go on the port-of-call tour to also experience the charm of Wajima and Nanao at the pier.
This port-of-call tour was planned with the hope that customers will experience the charm of traditions handed down in Wajima, where reconstruction is progressing, and that their visits will lead to support for the local communities that have supported our operating vessels' calls for many years.
Our diverse itineraries and port-of-call tours can only be realized with the warm welcome and support of local governments, tourism associations, and local communities throughout Japan. Mitsui Ocean Cruises will continue to create cruise trips that can be enjoyed by a wide range of people, together with the local communities.
