Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, Ltd. (President: Taku Kanzaka, Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo) will release the book 'Today's Monoshiri Series: Easy Forging Process New Edition' (authored by Yoshitaro Shinozaki). Forging is a processing technology that uses tools and dies to strike solid metal to form parts. It began with hot forging, where the material is heated and softened to ensure formability, but later, when cold forging technology, which processes at room temperature, was developed, this method spread in Japan, mainly in the automotive industry, around 1960. Cold forging technology is said to have contributed to Japan's rise as an industrial nation.
・ Thin-walled and hollow structures can be made by crushing and strengthening!
Forging is classified as a type of plastic working technology. Its advantages are high production efficiency and the ability to obtain high strength and high toughness. This is because the crystal structure constituting the metal is crushed and elongated during the forging process, creating a forged flow line (metal flow line) along the product shape. This enables thinning and hollow structures, reduces material costs, and allows parts that were previously separate to be formed in one shot.
Processing accuracy was conventionally said to be intermediate between casting and cutting, but in recent years, high accuracy that does not require post-processing has been achieved. As a result, small, lightweight, high-quality, complex integrated parts can be mass-produced, contributing to reduced processing costs.
・ Easy to understand explanation of the mechanism of high-quality processing with illustrations!
This book unravels the mechanism of forging process for realizing high added value and improving productivity in an easy-to-understand manner. It introduces the current situation and direction of advancement of the three forming elements: material, dies (tools), and machinery, in an approachable and easy-to-understand illustrated format.
It gently explains the differences and functions with press working and sheet metal working, which also use plastic deformation. It also explains how to handle high-quality processing based on evidence and data. The author, who has led research at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology for many years, conveys the appeal and wonder of 'forging process' and has updated the content for the first time in 13 years.
