AI Research Institute for Engineers will hold a public seminar to learn the basic knowledge and practical drawing points for appropriately conveying design intent on drawings, focusing on the concepts of dimensional tolerances, fit tolerances, and surface texture symbols.

Design drawings are required to be interpreted in the same way by anyone who views them, in terms of shape and design intent. If the instructions on the drawing are insufficient, parts may be manufactured that differ from the designer's intent, leading to increased costs and delivery delays due to rework.

Especially as manufacturing sites become more globalized, the importance of drawing expressions that are correctly understood by domestic and international stakeholders, and basic knowledge of tolerances, is increasing. Appropriately understanding and utilizing dimensional tolerances, fit tolerances, and surface texture symbols not only ensures quality but also leads to reduced rework and improved cost competitiveness.

Course Outline

This course will organize the relationship between size and size tolerance, and the appropriate use of size tolerances and geometric tolerances based on the 2016 revised JIS, and confirm the level of understanding with a diagnostic test.

Next, participants will learn the notation rules for size tolerances, design techniques, and how to determine tolerance values. Furthermore, the meaning and usage of fit tolerances and surface texture symbols, and their application to representative mechanical elements will be explained.

In the latter half, participants will learn the concepts of tolerance calculation within a single part and between multiple parts, and cumulative tolerances, aiming for practical application. Finally, a diagnostic test and Q&A session will be held.

Seminar Program

1. Relationship between Size and Size Tolerance

1-1. Appropriate use of size tolerances and geometric tolerances according to the 2016 revised JIS 1-2. Diagnostic Test (Self-scoring, confirmation of current knowledge through True/False quiz)

2. Notation and Usage of Size Tolerances

2-1. Rules for indicating size tolerances that surprisingly few people know 2-2. Representative mechanical elements and design techniques 2-3. How to determine and think about size tolerance values (upper and lower limits), etc.

3. Fit Tolerances and Surface Roughness

3-1. Meaning and usage of tolerance class symbols that are understood worldwide : Meaning of fit tolerance symbols, relationship between tolerance grades and tolerance zones, etc. 3-2. Meaning and representation of surface texture symbols 3-3. Design techniques for representative mechanical elements using dimensional tolerances

4. Basic Concepts of Tolerance Calculation

4-1. Concept of tolerance calculation within a single part 4-2. Concept of tolerance calculation between multiple parts (cumulative tolerance) 4-3. Reasons why tolerance calculations do not yield effective results

5. Summary

5-1. Diagnostic Test (Self-scoring: Confirmation of acquired knowledge through True/False quiz) 5-2. Q&A
