We are holding an on-site practical seminar to answer the recurring question in roll-to-roll coating development: "What coating thickness and speed are possible with each method?" The seminar incorporates videos and hands-on exercises to help participants understand theory as a "phenomenon image," making it accessible even for those who are not confident in chemical engineering or mathematics.

In product development using films, such as battery coating, perovskite solar cells, optical films, adhesives, and barrier films, optimizing coating conditions directly impacts quality, yield, and mass productivity. On the other hand, there are many situations where it is difficult to judge whether a particular method can be used for coating or to estimate the thickness and speed, and on-site decision-making is often delayed due to complex preconditions.

Lecturer: Nobuo Hamamoto (Representative, RTR Research Association)

Course Details

This seminar aims to enable participants to roughly estimate the "coatable thickness and speed for various methods" by organizing preconditions, a topic that is always discussed in the development of coated products. Participants can systematically learn the perspectives for each method to address on-site challenges such as not getting clear answers even when consulting coating engineers, or finding it difficult to make decisions due to too many conditions.

Seminar Program

1. Introduction
Coating and drying (development, pilot, mass production), examples of products using films, thickness and number of layers, dry thickness and wet film thickness, determining wet coating amount, comparison of coating methods, development steps, differences between laboratory and roll-to-roll, etc.

2. Slot Coating
Slot die configuration, liquid supply, installation angle, thin/thick coating, thin coating limit (streaks), minimum film thickness, coating window, flow concepts, lip shape, operating conditions (OverBite/UnderBite), etc.

3. Blade Coating (Comma Coater)
Classification, features, coating thickness, roll deflection/heat retention, liquid supply method, intermittent coating, flow in the liquid dam, etc.

4. Gravure Coating
Direct/Reverse/Kiss Reverse, enclosed method, gap and viscosity, film splitting, ribbing, coating window, cell filling, doctor blade angle, measures for thick edges, etc.

5. Wire Bar Coating
With/without wire, rotation method similar to mass production, calculation of coating amount, calculated values and known data, leveling, leveling of streaks, etc.

6. Spin Coating
Flow-dominated vs. drying-dominated, theoretical film thickness, thickness and rotation time, thickness distribution and rotation speed, etc.

7. Dip Coating
History, thin/thick coating, capillary-driven/drainage-driven, behavior, theory of steady-state thickness, etc.
