Online Seminar on Optimizing Slot Die Coating Conditions to be Held on June 30
The IR Engineer Education Institute will hold an online seminar on June 30 to help engineers and researchers optimize slot die coating conditions. The seminar aims to provide systematic learning of theory and practical know-how to solve defects and problems in functional film manufacturing and improve productivity.

The IR Engineer Education Institute will hold an online seminar where engineers and researchers struggling with the scale-up of functional films or defects and troubles during manufacturing can systematically learn “theory and on-site know-how” for slot die coating. Through diagrams and graphs to deepen understanding of phenomena, and exercises and quizzes, participants can acquire criteria for judging “coatable/non-coatable” and troubleshooting tips.
In the field of film development and manufacturing, while defects and troubles directly impact productivity and quality, information regarding coating often creates gaps such as “academic papers are too theoretical to apply practically” and “on-site information is biased towards know-how, making it difficult to grasp the overall picture.” There is a demand for opportunities to organize the causes of defects that become apparent during scale-up and mass production tests from theoretical and on-site perspectives, and to acquire reproducible judgment criteria.
**Seminar Overview**
Seminar Name: Optimization and High Precision of Slot Die Coating Manufacturing Conditions
Format: Online lecture via Zoom
Date and Time: Tuesday, June 30, 2026, 13:30-16:00
Tuition Fee: 19,800 JPY (tax included)
Instructor: Nobuo Hamamoto (Representative, Roll To Roll Study Group)
**Lecture Outline**
This seminar will explain the “theory and know-how” of slot die coating, linking them to on-site judgment and condition design. It will cover issues likely to occur in development, pilot, and mass production, differences between laboratory and Roll To Roll, coating defects and causes that become apparent in mass production tests, and other points related to scale-up.
**Seminar Program**
1. Introduction
- Coating and drying (development, pilot, mass production)
- Products utilizing films, film elements, components (thickness, number of layers)
- How to determine Dry thickness, Wet film thickness, and Wet coating amount
- Comparison of coating methods, development steps, differences between laboratory and Roll To Roll
- Coating defects and causes that become apparent in mass production tests, equipment/liquid preparation scale corresponding to scale, etc.
2. Slot Coating
- Slot die configuration, liquid supply method, installation angle, thin coating/thick coating and limits
- Minimum film thickness (Ca number) and coatable region (Coating Window), Couette-Poiseuille flow (including non-Newtonian)
- Lip shape, vortex, OverBite/UnderBite, operation without back pressure reduction
- Simultaneous multi-layer coating (viscosity balance, interface position, vortex formation conditions, precautions)
- Tensioned web method (tension and fluid pressure, gap estimation, Coating Window, slot vortex)
- Die design method (manifold/slot flow, differential pressure, cross-sectional shape, tapering, processing method, adjustment bolts)
- Ancillary equipment (backup roll deflection countermeasures, shims, heat retention, vacuum chamber)
- Handling of non-Newtonian viscosity (power law, mass balance, shear rate order)
- Intermittent coating (flow rate/gap control, application, complete coating, tandem coating, moving method)
**Target Audience**
Engineers and leaders involved in coating technology on site
Material researchers involved in coating development products
Researchers involved in battery coating, perovskite solar cells, optical films, adhesives, barrier films
