IR Engineer Education Research Institute will hold a public seminar that helps organize the causes of common troubles such as noise, malfunctions, and damage that tend to occur when first engaging in gear design, from both the basic theory of gears and design procedures.

While gears are used in many machines and devices, problems such as "loud noise when assembled," "not moving smoothly," or "in the worst case, not rotating at all" can occur even when design values are supposedly correct. The causes are often due to omissions in considerations that should be addressed at the design stage, such as how to define requirements, strength analysis, backlash, contact ratio, errors, and lubrication, or oversights in operation and adjustment. In this seminar, participants will confirm the causal relationship between troubles and design/operation factors in advance, leading to recurrence prevention and improvement in quality and efficiency.

Course Details

This seminar is structured in two parts, front and back, connecting theory and practice. Through this seminar, we aim to clarify the consideration items when determining design values and enable consistency checks with requirements at the design stage. Furthermore, for the often complex planetary gear mechanisms, key points such as necessary conditions for establishment and reduction ratio calculation methods will be organized.

Seminar Program

Part 1: Review of Basic Knowledge and Theory

・Gear functions/definitions, types and applications (spur gears, bevel gears, planetary gears, etc.)

・Names/terms and basic concepts (JIS definitions, reference circle, module, circular pitch, etc.)

・Tooth profile properties (involute tooth profile / cycloid tooth profile)

・Basic theory of gear design (necessary conditions, tooth profile curve, relationship between module, number of teeth, and reference circle, rotation ratio/torque calculation)

Part 2: Design Procedures and Practical Application

・Confirmation of requirements (power, rotational speed, torque)

・Provisional determination of module, number of teeth, and rotation ratio

・Shaft distance and layout design / gear configuration (reduction ratio, miniaturization, planetary gear consideration)

・Tooth strength design (bending strength / tooth surface strength / points to note in tooth width determination)

・Backlash design and methods for application and confirmation

・Points to note during design (contact ratio, error countermeasures, undercut, modified gears, noise countermeasures such as lubrication)

・Design exercises, gear drawing, design examples

Target Audience

・Mechanical design engineers

・Mechanical design team leaders, managers

・Mechanical design assistants, mechanical drawing technicians

・Those who will be responsible for gear design / those who want to systematically reorganize their basics
