NHK Publishing New Book "Living Together in a Fragmented World: The Philosophy of Richard Rorty," a significantly expanded edition of the highly acclaimed "NHK 100-Minute Masterpiece: Richard Rorty 'Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity'" with several new chapters, will be released on May 11, 2026. This is the first new book by author Hichoru Chu. Even before its official release, it secured the No. 1 spot in Amazon's "British and American Philosophy" bestseller ranking during the pre-order phase (as of April 22-23, 2026).

In an era where divisions are extreme and "rightness" clashes on social media, how can we truly communicate with others?

The American philosopher Richard Rorty persistently questioned the possibility of people living together even in a world without common ground. From his philosophy, this book brilliantly extracts intellectual practices for navigating a polarized age.

What we can do is confront the simple fact that we, disparate and fallible beings without an unshakeable common footing, must somehow manage to live together. In doing so, even without any basis or guarantee, we can entrust ourselves to the words of others, sometimes join hands, and at the very least, wish for the removal of the suffering and pain that befalls each other—this is what Rorty called "solidarity."
