Next Builders Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Inagi City, Tokyo, CEO: Yuta Naoi) conducted a lecture titled 'Mindset of Construction Industry x Technology' on April 10, 2026, during a joint new employee training program participated in by the Tokyo Medium and Small Construction Contractors Association. On the day, 69 new employees who joined small and medium-sized construction companies in Tokyo attended.

The theme this time was communication, which is indispensable at construction sites, and how to interact with generative AI, which has become increasingly popular in recent years. In the lecture, rather than just conveying information, real-time surveys were conducted on the spot. We implemented a training session that visualized the voices of new employees.

The Importance of Cultivating Young Talent in the Construction Industry

What is needed first during the new employee period is not just increasing knowledge. When something is unclear on site, whether they can perform the basics of 'listening properly, confirming, and communicating' greatly changes the speed of their subsequent growth.

On the other hand, for today's young people, generative AI has already become a familiar tool. Under the premise that on-site communication is important, we conducted practical training based on the construction industry, initially covering how to use generative AI, its usage methods, and precautions.

Contents of the New Employee Training

The themes were 'on-site communication', which is particularly important for young employees, and 'utilization of generative AI', whose spread has accelerated in recent years.

Recent new employees include a generation that has been affected by remote classes and non-face-to-face interactions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We conveyed the importance of building human relationships and the basics of not leaving things unclarified on site, confirming early, and properly communicating to the necessary parties. This is because it goes beyond human relationships and communication issues, serving as the foundation for the five major management principles (QCDSE) critical on site.

Simultaneously, regarding generative AI, which is unavoidable in future practical work, we introduced usage methods such as confirming technical terms, organizing meeting contents, and drafting email texts and documents. We also included instructions not to input personal or confidential information, that a person must always check generated outputs before submitting them externally, and not to blindly trust AI outputs.

The second half involved group work for ideation based on common problems occurring on site. It was designed as a training where participants not only understand the knowledge but also think for themselves about how to act and think on site.

Trends of Young Employees Revealed by the Survey

What first became clear from the results this time is the reality that 'they intend to ask people, but find it hard to actually do so.'

For the first action when in trouble, 'ask a senior first' was the most common at 50.0%, and 'research on my own' was 37.9%. On the other hand, regarding asking questions to seniors or bosses, 45.5% said they were 'a little nervous' and 22.7% were 'very nervous'. Combined, this is 68.2%. It was found that while there is an intention to rely on others, many new employees feel a psychological hurdle to asking questions.

Also, regarding the usage rate of generative AI, 36.4% said they 'use it almost every day' and 18.2% said they 'use it several times a week', making a total of 54.5% who use it at least once a week. This means that over half of the new employees already use generative AI on a daily basis.

The most common usages were 'research' at 68.2%, 'creating emails and texts' at 45.5%, and 'brainstorming/sounding board' at 43.9%.

It is clear that generative AI has already become a familiar tool for the youth.

Furthermore, the most requested future support options were 'business manuals' and 'qualification acquisition support', both at 66.7%. 'Opportunities for interaction with peers including outside the company' was also at 48.5%.

About the Survey Conducted on the Day

69 people participated in this training, and we obtained responses from 66 of them.

The questions checked their impressions of the construction industry, actions taken when in trouble, ease of asking questions to seniors and bosses, usual information gathering methods, desired future support, and generative AI usage status.

By grasping the reality of the participants at the training site and proceeding while sharing the results, we were able to connect it to learning more aligned with reality.

Support Needed in the Construction Industry Moving Forward

What we strongly felt again through this training is that simply teaching knowledge is insufficient for cultivating young talent in the construction industry.

New employees have a desire to actively consult. However, they actually harbor a difficulty in asking. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully convey the basics of communication at an early stage and create an environment where it is easy to consult.

At the same time, systems to support daily work are indispensable. Business manuals, qualification acquisition support, and building connections with peers directly lead to retention support.
