"Less than once a year" is the most frequent usage at 65.0%
First, we asked about the frequency of using crab/seafood mail order services.
The results showed that "less than once a year" accounted for 65.0%, followed by "1-2 times a year" at 31.0%, with these two categories making up over 90% of the total.
On the other hand, "3-5 times a year" was 3.0%, and "6 times or more a year" was only 1.0%.
We asked for the reasons behind the usage frequency, and here are some examples:
Respondents who answered "Less than once a year":
* Due to rising prices, I want to avoid buying every year. (40s, Male) * I only buy for special days like New Year's Eve and New Year's. (50s, Male) * Crab is very expensive, so I only order it once a year as a New Year's treat. (60s, Female)
Respondents who answered "1-2 times a year":
* Because I feel like eating it occasionally. (40s, Female) * It's an annual tradition. (50s, Male) * We always eat crab hot pot on New Year's Eve. (60s, Male)
Respondents who answered "3-5 times a year":
* Because my child likes sashimi. (30s, Female) * I want to eat it regularly. (70s, Male) * There are delicious seasonal items. (80s, Male)
It appears that people who use the service less frequently tend to view crab/seafood mail order as a special purchase. It seems to be chosen for special events like New Year's due to its high cost.
On the other hand, among those who use it more frequently, some enjoy seafood regularly and others enjoy it seasonally.
The top reason for purchasing crabs and seafood via mail order is "freshness from direct shipment from production area" at 43.0%
Next, we asked about the biggest reason for purchasing crabs and seafood via mail order.
The most common answer was "freshness from direct shipment from production area" at 43.0%.
This was followed by "can purchase from home" at 22.0%, and "perceived better quality than supermarkets" at 11.0%.
We also asked for more specific reasons. Here are some examples:
Please tell us the specific reasons for purchasing crabs and seafood via mail order.
* Because I can buy it when I want it. (40s, Female) * Because I can get high-end gourmet food from regions that are difficult to obtain at local supermarkets. (40s, Male) * Because I can send it to relatives who live far away. (40s, Female) * Because I want to eat fresh seafood from the area. (50s, Male) * Because I can purchase higher quality and fresher products. (60s, Male) * I can order fresh products from distant production areas while at home. (60s, Female) * My mother is from Sakaiminato, Shimane, and she especially likes crab, so I send it to her every New Year as a filial gesture. (60s, Male)
Seafood is an ingredient where freshness is paramount. Therefore, it is clear that many people feel the value of mail order lies in the freshness delivered directly from the production area.
Additionally, many comments cited rarity, such as "cannot obtain locally" and "do not usually eat." Mail order allows people to enjoy fresh crabs and seafood from any production area, making it a popular choice for gifts to distant relatives and parents.
The convenience of enjoying the flavors of production areas not found in local supermarkets at home, combined with a sense of specialness, is a unique appeal of mail order.
The most important point when choosing is "price" at 40.0%
Next, we asked about the important points considered when choosing a crab/seafood mail order service.
The most common answer was "price" at 40.0%.
This was followed by "production area" at 20.0%, "quality assurance" at 14.0%, and "review ratings" at 12.0%.
The top points were "price," "production area," and "quality assurance," indicating that many people seek value for money, while others prioritize the production area and quality.
We also asked for the reasons behind prioritizing these points, and here are some examples:
Respondents who answered "price":
* Because it's appreciated if I can buy it cheaply. (40s, Female) * Because the price should match the quality, and cost performance is important. (50s, Female) * No matter how delicious it looks, I avoid it if it's too expensive. If it's a one-time purchase, I can tolerate a slightly higher price, but if I plan to buy repeatedly, it has to be cheaper. (60s, Male)
Respondents who answered "production area":
* Because I want to enjoy famous gourmet foods from regions that are rarely available. (40s, Male) * Because I want to buy Japanese products. (60s, Male) * For crabs, Sakaiminato or Hokkaido are famous, so I think I can't go wrong choosing those. (60s, Male)
Respondents who answered "quality assurance":
* Because I had a bad experience once, I would consider it if there was quality assurance. (50s, Male) * Because I want fresh seafood. (60s, Female) * Because I prioritize freshness. (70s, Male)
Those who prioritize price seem to expect good deals unique to mail order. Comments like "I avoid it if it's too expensive, no matter how delicious it looks" reveal how much cost performance is demanded in crab and seafood mail order.
On the other hand, there were also comments expressing a preference for specific production areas and quality, such as "I want to enjoy gourmet food from famous production areas" and "I want to prioritize freshness."
Being able to enjoy crabs and seafood from famous regions like Hokkaido at home is a unique appeal of mail order.
It is understandable to prioritize freshness and quality to better enjoy the flavors of the production area.
The most common method for information gathering is "comparing multiple shop sites" at 35.0%
Finally, we asked how people gathered information when comparing crab/seafood mail order services.
The most common answer was "comparing multiple shop sites" at 35.0%.
This was followed by "EC mall reviews" at 18.0%, "review sites" at 16.0%, and "ranking sites" at 13.0%. Additionally, "recommendations from acquaintances/family" accounted for 7.0%, "SNS" for 2.0%, and "other" for 9.0%.
We also asked for the reasons behind choosing these information sources, and here are some examples:
Respondents who answered "comparing multiple shop sites":
* Because I want to compare production areas. (40s, Male) * Because I want to send something with good price and quality. (50s, Male) * Because the price for the same store and same product varies depending on the site. (60s, Male)
Respondents who answered "EC mall reviews":
* Because I can't see the product, I refer to reviews. (40s, Female) * Because I can see comments from other buyers. (50s, Male) * Because I believe reviews are reliable. (60s, Female)
Respondents who answered "review sites":
* Because I want to hear opinions from people who have actually purchased. (40s, Female) * Because when buying online, reviews are the only information available. (50s, Male) * Because I want to refer to various opinions. (60s, Female)
While people rely on various sources like photos, reviews, and recommendations from acquaintances, the common thread is the desire to "avoid making a mistake."
By referring to multiple shop sites and reviews, people seem to mitigate the uncertainties associated with mail order.

This survey revealed that 65.0% of people use crab/seafood mail order services "less than once a year," indicating it is positioned as a purchase for special occasions.
