■Awareness of Repairing and Using Suitcases for a Long Time

Suitcases are essential for travel and business trips.

After years of use, it is not uncommon for casters or zippers to break.

In such a situation, would you choose to 'repair and continue using' your suitcase?

Or would you decide to replace it?

In recent years, due to rising prices and growing environmental awareness, the idea of 'using things carefully for a long time' is gaining attention again. Regarding suitcases, more people may be becoming conscious of the option to repair and continue using them.

Therefore, this time, in collaboration with Globe-Trotter, we conducted a survey on 'awareness of repairing and using things for a long time' targeting 250 men and women nationwide who responded in a preliminary survey that they had purchased a suitcase.

■42.9% Responded 'Replaced' When Their Suitcase Broke

First, we asked if they had ever experienced a suitcase breaking.

As a result, 39.2% said 'Yes,' and 60.8% said 'No.'

While one might imagine suitcases break easily given travel troubles, more than half of the respondents said they had never experienced a breakage.

So, how did those who had experienced a breakage deal with it?

The most common response was 'Replaced it' at 42.9%.

This was followed by 'Disposed of it' at 20.4%, 'Repaired it' at 18.4%, 'Used it as is' at 16.3%, and 'Other' at 2.0%.

It is clear that many people who have experienced a breakage choose to replace rather than repair.

Perhaps the fact that problems are often noticed right before a trip or during travel, leading to a desire to 'have it ready for immediate use,' contributes to the choice of replacement.

■63.6% Responded as 'Replace Type'

Next, we asked which they were closer to: 'repair and use for a long time if it breaks' or 'replace it if it breaks.'

As a result, the 'replace type' was the majority at 63.6%, while the 'repair and long-use type' was 36.4%.

This result overlaps with the previous question about how they dealt with breakage.

It seems that when a suitcase breaks, many people choose to replace it based on factors like planned usage, cost, and repair time.

On the other hand, 36.4% responded as the 'repair and long-use type,' indicating that a certain number of people want to continue using their beloved suitcases while maintaining them.

We asked for the reasons for each response, and here are some examples.

'Replace type' respondents:

・Because repairing is troublesome. (Female, 20s)

・Because I don't have time to repair it. (Female, 20s)

・Because I think it's a consumable item. (Female, 30s)

・Because considering the repair cost, replacing it seems more economical. (Female, 30s)

・Because I don't know where to get it repaired. (Female, 30s)

'Repair and long-use type' respondents:

・Because I have an attachment to it. (Male, 20s)

・Because it's wasteful. (Female, 20s)

・Because replacing it costs money. (Male, 30s)

・Because if it can be fixed, I want to use it. (Male, 30s)

・Because buying a new one is expensive, so I want to use what I can. (Female, 40s)

From the 'replace type,' we heard comments like 'no time to repair' and 'don't know where to get it repaired.' It seems the reasons for choosing replacement are not necessarily a rejection of repair itself, but rather the hassle, cost, and difficulty in finding a repair service.

On the other hand, the 'repair and long-use type' cited reasons such as 'attachment,' 'wasteful,' and 'if it can be fixed, I want to use it.' This suggests that some people view their suitcase not just as a consumable item, but as a cherished possession with memories and attachment.

■69.3% Say Repair Service is a 'Decisive Factor' for Purchase

Next, we asked the 'repair and long-use type' respondents whether the availability of a repair service for a suitcase would be a decisive factor in their purchase.

As a result, 22.0% said it would be a 'major decisive factor,' and 47.3% said it would be 'somewhat of a decisive factor,' totaling 69.3% who said it would be a 'decisive factor.' Meanwhile, 20.9% said it would 'not influence much,' and 9.9% said it would 'not influence at all.'

For those who intend to use a product for a long time, the availability of a reliable repair service after purchase seems to be an important criterion in product selection.

■74.7% Say They Can Accept a Higher Price if It Can Be Repaired and Used for a Long Time

Next, we asked the 'repair and long-use type' respondents whether they could accept a higher purchase price if they could repair and use the suitcase for a long time.

As a result, 13.2% said they 'can accept it,' and 61.5% said they 'can accept it to some extent,' totaling 74.7% who said they could accept it. On the other hand, only 16.5% said they 'cannot accept it much,' and 8.8% said they 'cannot accept it.'

This shows that if the premise of 'long-term use' is established, many people are willing to accept a certain price level. It appears that they value not just the low initial purchase price, but also the peace of mind from being able to repair and use it for a long time, and the long-term relationship with the product.

■75.9% Say Their Value of 'Repairing and Using for a Long Time' Is 'Growing Stronger Year by Year'

Finally, we asked the 'repair and long-use type' respondents whether their value of 'repairing and using things for a long time' is growing stronger year by year.

As a result, 34.1% said it is 'growing much stronger,' and 41.8% said it is 'growing somewhat stronger,' totaling 75.9% who said it is 'growing stronger.' Meanwhile, 23.1% said it 'hasn't changed much,' and only 1.1% said it is 'weakening.'
