Question 7: Please tell us the reason why you think so.
*As a general rule, numbers are rounded to the first decimal place, so the total may not be 100%.
■ 65.2% answered 'I do not exercise at all'
First, we asked if they have a habit of exercising regularly.
As a result, 'I do not exercise at all' was the most common at 65.2%.
Looking at those who exercise regularly, '4 or more times a week' is 12.8%, and '2 to 3 times a week' is 12.2%. 'About once a week' and 'About a few times a month' were 4.9% each.
The result showed that 2 out of 3 people do not exercise at all.
On the other hand, combining all those who move their bodies even once a week makes 35.4%. Although a minority, it seems there is a certain number of women who have firmly made it a habit.
So, what kind of exercise do those who have an exercise habit mainly do?
73.7% answered 'Walking/Jogging', which was the most common result. The fact that it can be easily started using spare time or commuting time, and that no special equipment is required, seems to lead to a low hurdle for many people.
■ 36.8% answered 'Because I was worried about changes in weight and body shape' as the trigger to exercise
Next, we asked those who exercise what triggered them to start.
The most common was 'Because I was worried about changes in weight and body shape' at 36.8%.
This was followed by 'Because I was worried about the results of my health checkup' at 19.3%, and 'For stress relief and a change of pace' at 8.8%.
Visible 'realizations' such as body shape and health checkup numbers seem to be the push to start exercising.
■ People who continue exercising value 'not overdoing it'
Next, we asked those whose exercise habits continue about the reasons they can continue and the ingenuity they use, so we will introduce some of them.
What are the reasons you can continue exercising and the ingenuity you use?
- Continuing within a reasonable range. (20s, Female)
- Taking photos and videos and uploading them to SNS makes it fun and sustainable. (20s, Female)
- The reason my exercise habit continues is that the body shape I want to achieve is clear. The ingenuity is to walk as much as possible without using a bicycle or car. (30s, Female)
- Doing it even a little bit. (20s, Female)
- Running with my child. I get lazy if I'm alone. (40s, Female)
- It is easier to continue if you try to feel the exercise itself is fun. The ingenuity is trying to stay positive. (50s, Female)
A certain commonality can be seen in the voices of those who are able to continue.
That is the attitude of 'not trying too hard'.
Rather than doing it strictly every day, doing it within a reasonable range, and rather than making time just for exercise, blending it into daily movements like walking or shopping.
Such small ingenuity seems to be the key to continuation.
Some people turned posting on SNS or running with their children into something to look forward to.
The feeling of 'continuing because it's fun' rather than the sense of duty that 'I have to do it'. That shift in thinking might be supporting habituation.
■ 'Reasons for not continuing' are mostly 'troublesome', 'lack of time', and 'bad at exercising'
On the other hand, we asked those who do not exercise about the reasons they cannot continue or start, so we will introduce them.
What are the reasons you cannot continue or start an exercise habit?
- To repeat, because it's troublesome and I don't have time. (20s, Female)
- I don't know what to do, so I can't continue. (30s, Female)
- I can't maintain my motivation and quit immediately. (40s, Female)
- I've gotten into the habit of lounging around at home and just can't bring myself to move my body. (40s, Female)
- Because I'm originally bad at exercising, and the hurdle to start is high. (40s, Female)
- I can't make time, so I can't make it a habit. (50s, Female)
Looking at the voices received, the stumbling points were divided into several patterns.
One is the emotional hurdle such as 'troublesome' and 'lack of motivation'. Another was the lack of physical leeway, 'lack of time'.
Furthermore, a sense of weakness towards exercise itself and a lack of information, such as 'bad at exercising' and 'don't know what to do', are also conspicuous.
In other words, not being able to continue is not necessarily because 'willpower is weak'.
Not being able to grasp a trigger, or not knowing a method that suits them. It seems many people are stumbling at such an entry stage.
■ 73.2% answered they 'do not think it will take root' even with a dedicated program
Finally, we asked if they think an exercise habit would take root if they had an environment where a personal trainer could guide them with a 'program exclusively for you'.
As a result, 'I do not think it will take root at all' was 43.9%, and 'I do not really think it will take root' was 29.3%, with negative answers accounting for 73.2% in total.
On the other hand, 'I think it will probably take root' was 22.0%, and 'I think it will definitely take root' was 4.9%.
Even with dedicated support, they cannot have confidence in it taking root. The result showed that the majority of people think so.
We also asked the reasons why they think so, so we will introduce some of them.
Those who answered 'I think it will definitely take root' or 'I think it will probably take root'
- Because I can get advice. (20s, Female)
- Because it's an environment where people are watching me. (20s, Female)
- Because it seems to lead to motivation if it's exclusively for me. (40s, Female)
- If I am guided, I will always feel like I am being watched, and I think exercise will easily become a habit. (20s, Female)
- Because if there is a personal trainer, I will have a sense of crisis that I must exercise even forcibly. (30s, Female)
Those who answered 'I do not really think it will take root' or 'I do not think it will take root at all'
- I think it's a matter of motivation. (40s, Female)
- Because I have a strong desire to do exercise by myself. (30s, Female)
- It seems like it would become painful out of a sense of duty. (40s, Female)
- Because I don't have time and it's troublesome. (20s, Female)
- It's easier to do it myself. (30s, Female)
- It seems like it would become troublesome to commute. (40s, Female)
Looking at the reasons, the views were clearly divided between the affirmative and negative factions.
Those who think it will take root place their expectations on the 'feeling of being watched' and a 'program that suits them'. It was a voice that having someone nearby becomes the driving force to continue.
Conversely, the voices of those who think it will not take root are lined with words like 'It seems like it would become painful out of a sense of duty' and 'It's easier to do it myself'. It is a worry that the support itself will become pressure.
Some voices cared about the contents of the program, saying 'If it doesn't suit me, I won't continue'.
It is not the existence of support itself, but whether it suits their lifestyle and personality. That seems to be the dividing line of whether it will take root or not.
■ To a personal gym where women can truly continue by eliminating 'troublesomeness' and 'sense of duty'
In this survey, it was highlighted that many women feel a high hurdle in the 'sense of duty of being managed' and the 'troublesomeness of commuting'.
At 'UNDEUX SUPERBODY' operated by Fit Crew Co., Ltd., we stay close to such real anxieties of women, and rather than just forcing strict training, we provide space creation that raises daily motivation and dedicated programs that 'blend' into each individual's lifestyle.
■ Summary
In this survey, it was found that 2 out of 3 women in their 20s to 50s do not exercise at all.
As reasons for not continuing, there were many voices such as 'troublesome', 'lack of time', and 'bad at exercising', suggesting that many people are stumbling at the entrance rather than it being a matter of will.
On the other hand, those who are able to continue exercising valued ingenuity such as 'not overdoing it', 'blending it into daily life', and 'turning it into fun'.
Exercise will not last long if you try to work hard all at once.
Taking a slight detour while taking a walk, moving your body while listening to your favorite music. From such a small step, wouldn't it be easy to start even for those who are bad at it?
Finding a pace and method that suits you might be the shortcut to continuing without overdoing it.
