Survey on "Quietness" and Mental Health

Sounds from TVs and smartphones, family voices, cars and motorcycles passing outside. Our daily lives are filled with far more sounds than we realize. On the other hand, don't we sometimes wish for "a little quiet time" in unexpected moments? Whether it's after a tiring day of work or housework, when we need to concentrate, or on nights when we want to sleep soundly, there are surprisingly many situations where we seek quietness.

So, how many people actually feel "quietness" in their daily lives and desire a quiet space in their homes? In collaboration with Koshio Co., Ltd., we conducted a nationwide survey targeting 500 men and women on "Quietness and Mental Health."

50.6% responded that they "do" experience "quietness" in their daily lives.

First, we asked if they experience "quietness" in their daily lives. The results showed that "every day" was 16.2% and "sometimes" was 34.4%, totaling 50.6%. This means that more than half of the respondents experience moments of quietness in their daily lives. On the other hand, "not much" was 25.4% and "not at all" was 24.0%, indicating that nearly half of the respondents have few opportunities to feel quietness.

Next, we asked those who answered "every day" or "sometimes" to describe specifically when they feel quietness. Here are some examples:

### Please tell us when that is.

- When I'm alone at home and there's no sound from the house. (Teens, Male) - When everyone is asleep at night, or when traffic temporarily disappears, and I'm alone in my room. (20s, Female) - When I wake up early in the morning. (20s, Male) - When I open the window and listen only to the sound of the wind or birds outside. (30s, Female) - When I wake up early in the morning before anyone else, and open the shutters. (30s, Female) - Around 3-5 AM, probably because it's a residential area, I feel the most quietness. (30s, Female) - When I'm on a morning walk. When it's still around sunrise, there's no one around, so I feel quietness every morning. (40s, Male)

Looking at the responses, many mentioned "times when family and surroundings are asleep," such as early morning or late night. Many people experience quietness during times when they can be alone or before dawn when traffic decreases. There were also cases where people actively sought quietness, such as listening to the sounds of nature with an open window or going for a morning walk. It seems that people find quietness in their daily lives without going to special places.

74.2% responded that they "feel" their mind calms down or they relax with "quietness."

Next, we asked if they feel that "quietness" calms their mind or helps them relax. The results showed that "strongly feel" was 36.2% and "somewhat feel" was 38.0%, totaling 74.2%. This indicates that many people actually feel calm with quietness. "Don't feel much" was 12.8% and "don't feel at all" remained at 13.0%. When auditory information decreases, there's a sense that one's mind becomes clear and organized. In busy daily life, quietness can be said to be an important factor in maintaining mental well-being.

60.8% responded that they "have" experienced stress due to noise or everyday sounds.

Conversely, we also asked if they have ever felt stressed by noise or everyday sounds. The results showed that "often" was 24.0% and "sometimes" was 36.8%, totaling 60.8%, indicating that many people experience stress from sound. On the other hand,
