Perhaps you've thought about changing the color of your shelves or furniture, or noticed wear and tear on your fence or exterior walls. In such cases, some people might consider painting them themselves using paint or coatings.

On the other hand, many might feel it's "too difficult" or "too much trouble" and hesitate to try. How many people have actually tried DIY painting? And what kind of image do they have of DIY painting?

Therefore, in collaboration with Atom House Paint Online Shop, the official online shop operated by paint manufacturer Atom House Paint, we conducted a survey on "DIY Painting Experience and Interest" targeting 500 men and women nationwide.

Question 2: What kind of things have you painted yourself in DIY projects? (Multiple answers allowed)

Question 3: What was the trigger for you to try DIY painting?

Question 4: Please tell us why you decided to try DIY painting based on that trigger.

Question 5: Would you like to try DIY painting in the future?

Question 6: What are your reasons for wanting to try, or what do you perceive as hurdles?

Question 7: Do you have an image of DIY painting as "fun," "difficult," or "troublesome"?

Question 8: Please tell us the reason.

■ 71.6% responded, "Have no DIY painting experience."

First, we asked if they had ever done DIY painting (work using paint or coatings).

The most common answer was "No," at 71.6%.

On the other hand, only 28.4% responded "Yes," indicating that the majority of people are inexperienced in DIY painting.

DIY painting is one of the familiar tasks where tools can be easily purchased at home centers.

However, only less than 30% have actually experienced it, suggesting that many people feel a hurdle to trying it, even if they are interested.

■ The most painted item was "Crafts/small items" at 45.1%.

Next, we asked those who responded "Yes" to having DIY painting experience what kind of things they had painted.

The most common answer was "Crafts/small items," at 45.1%.

This was followed by "Walls" at 40.1% and "Furniture" at 34.5%.

Crafts and small items have relatively small areas to paint, making them easy for beginners to try, which is likely why they are often chosen as DIY painting subjects.

Also, a certain number of people undertook painting projects that change the impression of their homes, such as walls and furniture.

This suggests that DIY painting is utilized as a means to personalize familiar items or to perform home maintenance themselves.

■ The top reason for trying DIY painting was "Wanted to save money" at 24.6%.

Next, we asked those who responded "Yes" to having DIY painting experience what triggered them to try it.

The most common reason was "Wanted to save money," at 24.6%.

This was followed by "Concerned about damage or age" at 21.8% and "Wanted to personalize" at 19.0%.

・Purchased an antique flower stand at a recycle shop. The paint was peeling.
